So I'm starting to accrue a bunch of detritus type crap in my sump, even in my chaeto. I don't run a sock because it made my skimmer go ballistic. Do you guys have any suggestions on what type of pump or other method you use to "vacuum" the sump area when it's too low to rely on a siphon?

Thanks peeps!

My sump is raised 2 feet off the ground to avoid this problem now. Just attach a tube to a pump and pump it out. When I had too much crap to siphon out I would use an old fluval 305 canister filter filled with fiber pads to block the detritus from getting back in.

I've been having this exact same problem. Stopped using a sock for the same reason.

soak a sock in RO/DI water that will take care of skimmer going crazy, especially new ones.

Just did this for the first time.. Had a goby in my sump had to take all Chaeto out and it was nasty! I used a small pump with some vinyl tubing snd sucked all the cr@p off the bottom.. Also thinking of shaking my Cheato out in some sw, to get the gunk out of it now, but hesitate since I don't wanna deplete the pods and good stuff in it.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Do you use an external pump or do you submerge a regular pump in the waste bucket?

I'll try soaking the socks. I had read somewhere that might help so I had it submerged it tap water, but now that I think about it that was a dumb idea. I'll prepare a new batch of rodi to put both in.. Thanks!

You can run the pump through a sock, that way your not rushing as your sucking the detritus out, and the waters not wasted.

I used a small submersible pump, had to basically shut the system down, stir up the fuge area to get the waste into the water column and then emptied it, before a water change. If I tried to just "vacuum" the bottom it would just clog up the intake on the pump..

Use a small pump and stir up the detritus. Pump it through a sock into a small bucket. When the bucket is full pour it back in. Do that a few times. When you get out all detritus do a water change. Do it this way so you don't empty out so much water for a water change. At least at the end you'd be able to make sure all detritus is out with the amount of water you wanna change.

A home depot "bucket head". It's a mini shop vac that attaches to a 5 gallon bucket. Works great for cleaning out the sump. Best 20 bucks I've spent in a while

This lol, i prefer the KISS method. i just cut the flow to the tank, used the shop vac, whatever water i took out i put freshly made saltwater back in. Also +1 on soaking socks before putting them in. If you dont want to vacuum your sump, use a sock.

Get one of those aqueon water changer. They comes in 25 or 50 feet. Just hook it up to your sink and siphon away. No need to lift anything and it pretty much suck all the detritus out of my sump. Been using it for years and love it. BRS carry them.

Those are nice, but you need to have the right fitting on your sink faucet.
