I need to buck up and get a decent rodi system, but am having a hard time understanding the difference in value/performance between the following two systems. There's quite a difference in price. People have recommended both of these systems, but I'm not sure which one to get. Any insight would be appreciated. The first one is $280, the second one is $189.

One is a refurbished unit. With new filters. One is brand new. The refurb unit is all that you need imho also the unit from marine depot has 2 tds meters and the refurb has 1. Also the one from marine depot is a maxcap system so the filters are a little different. But again the bottom unit is is that you need

Anything I need to know about operation costs? Can I use off brand filters or are they specific for the max cap?

Yes you could use different brand filters if you wanted to. The canisters are your standard 10" and if you where to switch membranes just make sure that the proper flow restricted is used. Operation cost arent too bad. You figure for every gallon of good water ull waste 3-4 gallons of waste. This is typical of most rodi units unless you have a unit that is 1:1

If I were you I would buy from www.airwaterice.com. I have better deals and this quarter I am including a senno TDS meter on orders >$40. Plus save an additional 10% with your reef club code. We build, test and ship your order, typically within the same day...never pre-made in a box all water systems come with a lifetime warranty & expert advice. My RODI units start at $110...check out my world famous typhoon 5 stage...over 10,000 sold! Here is the link...http://theh2oguru.com/the-typhoon-reefkeeping-rodi-5-stage-with-asov.html

by looking at the picture.
the first one come with 2 tds meter, flush to clean the Membrane, and come with High water Di cartridge and Silicatebuster media.
That add cost to the unit.
While the second unit is good too. You can add manual flush. All you need to worry the water pressure go to the unit (60 psi to 90 psi)

BTW, what is your water use?

I get 75 GPD at 50 psi from my 75gpd Dow filmtec membrane... it over produces by 20% versus the competition (so at 60 psi it will produce 90 GPD), I also offer a 100 gallon per day high rejection Dow FilmTec membrane and it also over-produces by 20% at the same 50 psi... they both have mild chlorine and chloramine tolerance. All my units include a fast flush...if you want all the bells and whistles like pressure gauges, TDS meters , TDS alarm, superior pre-filtration, fully automated rodi water, an extra hand held TDS meter, and a lifetime warranty...150 GPD you should check out my typhoon 3 extreme....http://theh2oguru.com/typhoon-iii-extreme-150.html
