Sorry to hear. Even bad things happen to good cops sometimes.
Any updates this morning?

How'd everything turn out this morning?

Were you able to do another water change?

My guess is this tank is going to come back with a vengeance! If I know Steve, he'll quietly get it all back in line and start buying a bunch of baller sticks and other livestock. Then one day he'll quietly post a bunch of pics that make our jaws drop.

wow, this is such a bummer. If I wasn't so far, id definitely donate a few frags. I'm sorry, i know how you feel tho. We've all had disasters. Myfrag tank return pump did the same thing, except mine did run all over the floor for a few min until the sump was drained. Burned a few plugs, lost a ton of frags and I'm still here lol. I hope your fish r ok. i think they should be

Dude that sucks Steve. Sorry to hear bro but I know the tank will be restored in no time. Hope that PBT is doing well. Just make sure he's eating plenty of Nori and he'll be a real hardy fish.

update:

Well I end up doing a 50g water change around 2am. I didn't plan on staying up that late but captain Phillips was good and I couldn't stop watching it lol.

this morning I woke up about 6 and started packing corals. I really just packed my chalices and a few nice sps frags. most of my corals are encrusted so I just broke of frags. I figured maybe if I lose the colonies I can at least have a frag of it.

sadly the water is still white. but you could see through it now. fish seemed ok. I saw one sps looked completely bleached. I didn't really inspect the sps, because I was trying to do so much before work. My refugium looks like it got nuked because all the algae was covered in white dust. I'm not sure what I can do with that besides take everything out and shake it. maybe i'll suck the top layer of sand in there. I turned the frag tank back on and of course it started turning white but that's ok because I took everything out.

Hang in there bro. These events are a gutpunch and leave you winded but remember that tank was bada** and you made it that way which means with time in your care it'll be that way again. And you've obviously spread enough love to have people willing to get your back. Trust me...there is a light at the end of this tunnel.

I called a dealer and they can send me a replacement CPU board for my doser. I'm pretty sure only that piece needs to be replaced. I would think with a little work the original can be fixed but I'd rather pay. so it cost me $74, I can live with that and I'll see if it works when I get it. I jumped the gun last night because I didn't know if my doser can be fixed and I still really don't know so I told E I would buy his calcium reactor. he gave me a sweet deal so im going to buy it even if I can fix my doser.

Sooooo... I don't care what anyone says my skimmer is frickin awesome! I've never had a problem with it and it skims like crazy. it never overflows like my expensive warner marine at work and pulls out anything I need to. here is a picture from what it pulled out since last night. I never even adjusted the skimmer at all. it skimmed out a lot of the white dust that was floating around.

Thank you everyone for the offers. I might hit up some of you as I saw many corals were stressed out. I don't know what will be dead yet.

Now, here is where everything gets weird and I just do not understand at all. I've actually been testing daily because I wanted to make sure my doser was set back to normal after I gave omar his corals back. When I was holding his corals as well as a 10 inch clam I bought it threw my dosing requirements out of whack so I adjusted it and was finally back on track.
here is the last week (I test in the evenings):

feb28 9dkh
march 1 9dkh
march 2 9dkh
march 3 9dkh
march 4 9dkh
march 5 (disaster) no testing

50g water change 2am

6am 8dkh??

what does that mean? i should have tested it before the water change but i assumed i would have gotten a high and innacurate result since it was so clouded. could it have gone up and then dropped all the way back down with the water change? i used instant ocean. I usually buffer the water for water changes to bring it up to 9dkh but i didn't so it could bring it back down but could i have made it swing way up and then way down??

heres a picture of how much was dumped into my tank at once. don't mind the ugly lettering, its hard to do on a phone with my finger lol
I use the BRS 2part for calcium and alkalinity.

Most of the elements precipitated...hence the white dust. It's not in the water but rather as a solid so that's why it's not showing up in your test methinks.

ahhh i didn't think about the precipitation even though it was clearly right in front of me. only time will tell what the effects will be. another water change tonight and I'm just going to leave it alone for a while and see what dies.

You know it's an interesting chemistry question. So it seems like they went in roughly equal amounts, and I think they go in solution roughly equally, maybe all you have is precipitant in your tank and maybe the dKH and Ca remain close to what they were. This chemistry always goes a little over my head.

I think you'll find that you'll need to dose less than normal. The precipitate will eventually get back into the water but it'll be very slow. Run a sock so you can get as much out as possible.
