I live in Los Angeles and after the 94 Northridge Earthquake I bought an emergency generator.

In the past 23 years I had to use the generator 2x. In the past 6 months I have had to use it 8x.

The last 2 weeks of June, when the weather was over 100 degrees the power went out twice.

The first time I was home.

On June 26th, i was on vacation.....

We live and learn. New 22kw Generac autostart generator with 200amp auto transfer switch has been delivered. Now hopefully I can get it hooked up before LADWP fails again.

Sad to hear. One of my fav set ups. How did the coral survive, and not the fish. Glad to hear the outdoor system didnt take any losses.

Sorry for your loss. I'm buying a generator because I'm always worried of power going out.

Hell yeah I hate Edison! One year, we had a week long power outage on and off, mostly through the night and the morning hours during a 100 degree summer. Thankfully, I wasn't running a reef tank at the time, but I can't imagine myself going through that ordeal. Just like construction workers, there will be one guy working on fixing the problem and five other guys on lunch at the same time, all while taking his sweet time to fix it. Haha

Terrible news about your tank and my condolences.

Can you tell us a bit more about the auto-start generator though? I was looking into getting a generator but I would prefer a unit I wouldn't have to turn on if needed.

**** Dave. Sorry for your loss. Total bummer. I'd be interested in seeing your generator and transfer switch setup once you get that going. I'd like to do something like that for my system at some point.

Not enough 02 with that many fish and the power being out with no circulation.

Yet American's think they deserve more and more pay for doing very little! $100k for LADWP worker in 2012. Money well spent from what it sounds like.

Sad but true. My parents LADWP bill goes up faster than sanh's tiny pecker when he sees jimmy and kenny. And their union holds so much leverage, they can literally shut down the city and inconvenience millions of people if they don't get what they ask for during contract/mou negotiations. So the city pays via the pockets of its' citizens and then pays again when they get sh*tty services like Dave encountered while on vacation.

Is the backup ready to go? Is the current ladwp outage affecting you?

Hey Guys,

The one thing I have learned this past year is having a generator is not enough. I bought my Generator in 94. I thought I was smart. I have a package of spare oil and spark plugs. I store the generator with Bio-Phor (let's gas sit for long periods of time without going bad). I also had 10 gallons of extra gas on hand. Every couple of years I pulled out the generator and ran it for an hour.

But when you really need it, are you prepared?

I never got the manual transfer switch installed.

So when the time comes ---Do you have 4-6 long heavy duty extension cords lined up and ready to go?

Two of our outages occurred this year when we were out of town. Our House sitter didn't know what to plug. So Now I have big Red Duct Tape flags on the Outlets that need to be connected to the generator. And a map.

All of us have duct taped and wired our systems together and only we know where everything is. If you don't have a 100% auto start generator with whole house transfer switch, then start thinking about what would happen if when the power goes off, you are passed out in a Brothel and your significant other (who doesn't know where you are) still loves you enough to try to save your tank.

Build a set of instructions of what to plug in and where. And even though you may have 20 extension cords. Go buy 4 brand new heavy duty ones, and put then with tags saying where each one should be plugged into, and label where on the generator to plug them into.
