i just got a pair a few weeks ago and so far they've been doing great, starting eating the day after i got them. they're absolutely gorgeous, i just wish they weren't so shy and would swim around more. i don't really get to see them much :(. hopefully they'll get more comfortable with more time.

I recently got 8 females (6 weeks ago). I threw 5 in my display tank and put three in another tank. As of now all 8 are alive and eat ANYTHING thrown into the tank. Dont seem to have a obvious looking male yet, but they are some of my all time favorite fish.

Yup the first few weeks I never saw em much. Except at feeding time. After about 3 weeks they became much more visible. Now they swim around no problem. They do not pick on any of my fish nor are they bullied.

Hey Marde,
Hope all is well, I want to stop by and check out your tank sometime.

I'm also in the market for some flame wrasses. I always wanted a harem but I'm really picky with my selection. I have a rimless tank and recently got a cover/lid so I'm looking for a harem. I went to OCaquatic last week but didn't pull the trigger yet. I'm looking for a supermale and 2 females. I wanted an establish male that won't change sex. So I'll tag a long on this thread to get more info.

Anytime Paul. Yeah, I did not get a supermale. Went with more quantity than quality. Plus I wanted to make the transition for them as easy as possible. Got all females and let them figure it out on their own who's gonna be boss.

a male flame wrasse will not revert to female, I have had bad luck with terminal male fairy wrasse lately, lost a lineatus, flame, and rhomboid. but all the females are doing just fine out in the open all day. i'm thinking of just getting females and letting them transition in my tank.. I won't ever have a full blown supermale this way, but the females do much better in captivity than males from what I've experienced

Bummer about the losses, but I agree with your logic and experience with having better luck with females than the super males. Wonder why that is?

Yeah the Hawaiian flame wrasses are quickly becoming one of my favorite fish. Here are 2 videos I shot of the guys I picked up at OC Aquatics. Notice how the male is really starting to color-up within only 5 weeks. I wonder how they will look in a year. :) I am amazed how quickly they change colors. Thanks OC Aquatics for getting these beauties!!!

I got the pair at first. The Super Males dies in 2 days, Female was come out in next day eating and no sign of stress. Then I just got 1 pair last month, one sub male and one female. Female was come out in next day, and it took 2 weeks for male to show up. I thought I got trio until last week. My old female is starting to become Sub male quickly.. I mean so quick . Her lower part get really really yellow. I think I have 2 male and 1 female now.

Can anyone tell me the main differences in appearance from the male and female flames? All of my fish so far mostly just look pretty much red.

Have had my supermale and two females for as long as Marde, doing wonderfully, eating EVERYTHING, male is noticeably growing and out and about since day one. They NEVER hide.

Don't get the trio Paul, I'm sure you can find just as nice fish that aren't identical to mine :reddy:

BTW Marde, the supermales get even deeper red on top and bright yellow bellies.

the sideways iPhone vids from the first day

My Tank Build

I too was thinking about adding another flame wrasse but Ive had bad experience with them in the past...I had all 3 just die on me by developing some weird ulcer on the head..
It all came from the same vendor...

I have heard they prefer colder tanks?
