So this morning on reefbuilders Mike Paletta posted an article on the "Reefers Code".

http://reefbuilders.com/2014/12/11/reefers-code-formally-mike-paletta/

Its a good read if you get a chance to do so.

In a nutshell it seems as if he is saying that he feels the reefers code is not what it was and that most are in the hobby to make money etc. I personally feel and even posted on that article that the SoCal reefing scene is full of a lot of people who give away frags, help each other out and even come together to raise funds for a fellow reefer who needs a tank occasionally.

Do you guys and gals think that the "reefers code" is alive and well in Southern California? If not what do you think needs to change?

it is a long lost art and there are many on here that embrace it and help others. But there are many out there only in it for them selves and contribute very little if any to this community . glass half full or half empty not sure I try to contribute for the better. Im sure there are a lot of people that would beg to differ but I try to practice what I preach and help other even though they may not buy from my store. I try to do that with no expectation and truly I feel it is more about the animals at this point. I feel that if we help people we learn from that and if the hobbyist are successful it can change the salt water/ reef hobby reputation. I feel that is where stores should come into to play. not to look at the new / any customer for a quick buck but to advise him correctly build a relation ship. More people that are successful in our hobby , I feel will change ..ohh salt water tanks are hard to maintain specially reefs. I hear that all the time when new people come into my shop. I want them to know its not that hard if you have a good LFS that is honest and willing to spend the time to help you learn the ropes . I feel that is where it all should start

Old reefers code is alive and well my friend. Atleast here in socal it is...but that's because we have kept it that way by keeping the community trunk tight. Just check out the "thank you" threads or "shout out" threads of newer reefers or just reefers in general thanking or shouting out someone else for helping them or giving them free frags or equipment or just advice and time to lend a hand.

When I depart from a fellow reefer's house, I don't mind shaking his wet hand or as I call it, the "Reefers' Handshake"......

Don't judge me....

Reefer Code.

there are a lot of new people that do the same thing... youngsters that still offer free frags of some stuff... like xenias, chaeto and softies...

still though, that's pretty awesome IMO... the reason the code seems lost is because of the value of the corals... if someone has a tank with nothing but high end stuff, and doesn't give it away, they might look like a person that's only out to make money... when i had my chalice garden, some people told me that... it sucked... because in order to make room for my collector pieces i gave away huge colonies of nuclear greens, of bam bams, of wall hammer corals... i traded collector pieces more than sold... that's how my collection grew...

another thing, well, it's nice to have a hobby that pays for it's own salt sometimes... if you have a frag of something that people want, there's no harm in making some honest money and going to the LFS and buying some supplies... or a fish... whatever... i see nothing wrong with that...

what does grind my gears are flippers... people that buy an entire tank on craigslist, then piece it out here on the forum... or buy a coral from an LFS every one knows, and then tries to make profit from it here on the forums... or... or... or..... when they know they have red bugs, AEFW or sick fish and still sell... and people know that they have aids tank, but don't say sh!t... that totally pisses me off too... that should be part of the code as well... the thing is to help eachother maintain healthy tanks and enjoy the hobby... not back stab and spread problems among friends...

IMO most (if not all) reefers I've met here are all very cool and are NOT in this to make money but are just enjoying the hobby and helping out other cool reefers. There's always a few people (in any hobby) that will give an entire forum or hobby a bad name.

I read the article. And I agree with the reasons why it's diminishing. As far as the code not existing, there are a bunch of guys here that the code is alive and well with.

I think the code still exists it is just a different era in reef keeping right now. The technology has grown and has enabled more newbies like me into the hobby. I enjoy it and the vast majority of people I have dealt with inside and outside the forum are happy to share their knowledge and expertise. You are always going to have some exceptions but overall I think the spirit of the code is alive and well.

I think the code is alive and well in the hobby and while there are Hypsters that are in it for the minute there are more that are willing to help out and return the generosity. I just wish SPS was not so hard to grow.
