can anybody on the vodka bandwagon actually do the chemistry and tell us all how this is supposed to work in our tanks?....I really want to know...Don't refer me to some Einsteins living room success story... Iv already read a ton of carbon dosing articles too... Gotta love this internet reef shi3...Im gonna start my own jello dosing thread..Jello dosing is only to be used concurrently with my spaghetti/squash filter technology though.....ESlime

I roll got dogs for a living, so I can't explain the chemistry behind it.

But I do know that vodka is primarily ethanol, and ethanol is a carbon food source for bacteria. The bacteria needs two things to grow, carbon food source and nitrates.

Add the vodka/ethanol/carbon food source, and let the bacteria do the rest.

U can also do the same thing with sugar or vinegar.

Boom hot dog chemistry. Lol

Vodka is a organic carbon source "Ethanol" and it helps to increase the bacterial biomass in your tank. For this, Vodka addition would result in bacterial growth and reproduction. During this process nutrients in the water ( incuding PO4 and NO3 ) are taken up (away) for the formation of new macromolecules (Bacteria). Due to its rapid growth and reproduction of the new bacteria, the PO4 and NO3 levels drop because there is no food for them to eat. The increase in biomass of the new Bacteria leads to an increase in Skimmate production ... Thats why you need to have a good skimmer ...

So... the export mechanism is again a skimmer?....Is there any indication that our tanks are actually lacking a carbon source?...I find that hard to believe...I don't mean to be a wet blanket.. but Im just getting tired of so much nonsense that finds it's way into the dogma of reef keeping...

The carbon cycle is well understood by all who study it...I don't see how making more carbon available in the system will force anything....You can offer more Mc Donalds to your dumb *** brother in law.. Doesn't mean he will eat it...You can introduce all the C02 in the world to your plants but they will not take up any more than they need.... I dunno maybe I missed something...Eslime

If you read all the carbon dosing articles like you said you did, then you should have a general understanding of how it works.
The export mechanism is the skimmer and while I haven't read too many scientific studies on it, thousands of reefers have been carbon dosing for the past ten or more years and the results show.

The reason why people dose carbon is because our tanks do in fact lack a carbon source. Bacteria needs three things to grow: N, P, and C. We supply lots of P through the food we feed and the fish produce N & P as well. Hope this clears some stuff up.

Yea.... again ... nonsense.... did you mean the NPK ratio??.... Carbon is not really a factor.......Correct me if I'm wrong and please refer me to the publications...I dont care how many thousands of hobbyists buy into a rumor... Does not make it a fact...

No, I'm talking bout the NPC ratio or the redfield ratio.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redfield_ratio

If you're so keen on finding some information on how this works, why don't you use Google? Carbon dosing isn't snake oil buddy. It's been around for quite some time now. Nobody is buying into a rumor. They are using a product that works and is proven by thousands of hobbyist and science as well.

So in your education... you were allowed to site wiki??..did you do your grad research on google..???....All Im asking for the carbon dosing people is to provide some facts...Just facts..show me the research...Sorry if anybody got bent about this...Eslime

You're so ignorant. Is wikipedia not good enough for you? Did you even read the page I sent you? You do realize that pages from wikipedia have references, correct? In my education, we were allowed to use wikipedia as a page to give us general understandings of specific ideas and use the reference material inside the page.

Here's Alfred C. Redfield's explaination of how C N P are related and how he came about finding the Redfield ratio.

http://faculty.uml.edu/david_ryan/84.653/Course Material/lecture15/Redfield 1934.pdf

I'm done with this.

I'm no scientist, but Randy Holmes Farly from RC is...and he has explained carbon dosing pretty thoroughly. He also carbon doses his own tank. Randy has an A+ reputation amongst the reefing community. If u really wanna know details, google Randy Holmes Farly and read some of his threads. He's got a lot of great info on this subject.

We're all ignorant about lots of things. Ignorant means that you don't have knowledge about something. The word ignorant and stupid are not synonymous.

Clearly, Erik is not knowledgeable about how the Redfield ratio and I was breaking it down for him. He didn't understand that so I sent him the Wikipedia page. He didn't seem to understand that either so I sent him Redfield's study on how he came about this ratio, as he asked for.

Don't try and spin it. You meant it as an insult and it won't be tolerated.
