I started plumbing my tank this week. I'm at the point where I want to plumb everything in my overflow. I'm 90% sure I want to go with a dorso. Its a 1.5" drain. How large of a hole should I drill in the top cap? Also, how far below the planned water level should the 90 elbow go down to? Should I put the top of the horizontal T off at the water level I want, start with a small hole and increase its size to achieve the desired water level in the overflow? or is there a standard "sweet spot" builders go by?

I think you kinda have to find the sweet spot, I'd suggest you don't glue the cap on and try several sizes before gluing it up.

Don't you have 3 peephole drilled in your overflow? Why not do a herbie instead...if you want to do a durso, you can always drill a hole for a 1/4" valve,than you can always open or close the valve to your choice.

If you have enough holes of an emergency drain, I definitely agree, go Herbie method.

I do have 3 holes in the over flow. (2) 1" and a single 1.5". The overflow box also has another hole half way down the tank for some reason. I plugged it with a 1" bulkhead and had planned on using the one of the 1" drain holes as a easy drain/fill port for water changes. I was going to plumb the drain out the back to a T - one going to my mixing station, the other, drain, out to my front yard since the tanks in my garage. I haven't gotten that far so I can still switch it up.

Overflow hole i'm talking about:

An emergency drain might be a good idea, although do plan on have Ultimate Acrylics make me a black lid for my overflow. If I go with a herbie would my 1" be my main drain and the 1.5" be the back up, or the other way around and why?

Here is where I'm at on the plumbing so far.

Left to right -
* 1.5" drain
* 1" return
t1 - ATS or Separate Display fuge (haven't decided yet)
t2- Calcium reactor
t3 - Aux but most likely Zeovit
t4 - Chiller
Going to 90 down to Sp6 return pump in far right chamber
* 1" either herbie drain or easy water change?

Sump
Chambers left to right
* ATO Reservoir
* Return Chamber/ Possible ATS location
* Equipment section - skimmer, cal reactor maybe zeo reactor
* Return pump section.

You might be forced to do a Herbie if you have your heart set on an SP6. I don't think a 1.5" Durso would be able to keep up.

Hmm maybe I oversized it then. I was thinking it'd be feeding my chiller and separate refugium in the future. This tank stands pretty tall with the nozzle being 5.5' high. That head pressure alone leaves me just over 2000 gph with my total water value being about 225 sump and DT combined.

Crap it looks like 1.5" can only handle 1200gph gravity fed?
