I know emeralds will eat bubble algae. I've been noticing a few areas with some. Its nothing serious but I thought maybe adding one or two might help. I've just always been wary with crabs in general given how opportunistic they are. What are you opinions? I'd rather not add a rabbit fish... I'm not looking to increase my bioload.

I have always had great luck with emerald crabs and bubble algae. They do like hanging out on acros though. Once the algae is gone I normally try to catch and sump them til the next time I need them.

I feed my tanks fairly heavy. I think that's why mine never seem to do much damage with my bubble algae. I've never witnessed them picking at coral, but that may be for the same reason.

Isn't there a specific type that goes after bubble algae? Somewhere I read about the ones with red in their joints were the bubble algae eaters.

I had 2 of them before, and both of them went to zoas or mushrooms after for awhile even though I fed my tank a lot. Best you could do is finding the most smallest ones to add in your tank. They are small, so they will not do any harm much if with good feeding also.

Emerald crabs are badass and will get to work as soon as you drop them in your tank. A few of them became aggressive towards my fish once the algae was out of my tank. They also didn't last too long once the food was gone, I believe they died from starvation. Another thing is they pissed off alot of my zoas when they searched for food...

haha well they walk over everything to get where they need to go, they are going to piss something off en route. Just get smaller ones.

I normally just wait for them to get on a piece of rock that easily moves and pull out the entire rock to get them out.

Hey cody,

FWIW, my display used to have a pretty bad bubble algae infestation (which you might've noticed still exists in my frag tank). The bubble algae is pretty much entirely out of my display now thanks to emerald crabs. I haven't noticed them going after any of my corals -- in fact, they even picked AROUND my zoos which were starting to get overrun by the bubbles.

I have one big emerald who I believe did most of the cleanup. I have several smaller crabs in my frag tank, but they don't seem to be effective as the one big one. I'm going to try to catch him one of these days.

I recent picked up 2 because I had a small bubble algae outbreak...once I got water parameters under control they started picking at corals. If you do go for one, try and find a small one, I remember reading that the younger ones typically stick to bubble algae.
