You might want to add some strainers or guards to that piping. Or you will need another drain put in like emergency overflow. Also, if you have APEX, you might want to get the FMM/leak detectors or high water sensors at the sump...so it can shut down pumps if they detect leak or high water levels. And I think another reefer recently mentioned that they put pond liner in their stand to catch leaks. So you will have to build in multiple fail safes for this or it's going to happen again.

I do feel your pain though. I have an external chamber...that I'm weary of running. I'm going to have to put in some fail safes as well.

A simple screen will prevent this. Make it larger than you think so is does not get blocked by algae or other stuff.
I once had a large turbo snail get in a drain pretty much blocking it. It worked its way down to the valve where it could not get out. I had to stuff a flexable rod down and break its shell up to clear the drain. Luckily i had a second drain.

I have had 2 floods due to snails. Now I make sure there is never enough water in any given part of the system that is capable of overflowing the next. IE the return chamber in my my sump only holds 2.5 gallons and that is not enough to overflow the 3-4gallons that it would take to fill the top 1.5" of my display, and the empty portion of my sump can easily hold the 5-6 gallons it would take to get down below my return nozzles should the check valves fail and the return pump quits for some reason. The ATO only holds 4 gallons so the sump can hold that as well should the pump stick on.

There are only 2 types of reefers. Those who have flooded and those who haven't flooded YET. A lot of careful consideration and simple planning can go a long way to preventing boo boos. I feel your pain. I been there.
