We were discussing the lag in the chatroom today.

02/14/08 09:54 AM <epicfish> Agreed.
02/14/08 09:53 AM <SteveOhh> it was a novelty at first, but I think virtually nobody uses them anymore
02/14/08 09:52 AM <SteveOhh> IMO Mike needs to get rid of the radio, arcade, casino & keep nothing but 48 hours of chat logs..................that'll free up bandwidth & server space

:)

nooo not the casino and arcade!!Maybe the radio

I'm willing to upgrade the forum to make it faster. Need some web experts to chime in. What do I exactly need to do to make this site run faster? Do I buy more bandwidth?

What's it being hosted on? What kind of hosting? Shared?

How big are the chat archives right now?
Im using godaddy, and it seems like I used about 26% of the bandwidth and 30 percent of the disk space. Still have a long way to go. And no its not shared. Not sure how big the chat archives is right now.

I wish the chatbox was added back its much more of a pain to use it now when there is no way you can surf and use it. Its even better now to just ask on the chat box and not even waste the time with threads. Why not have the option to check and uncheck if there is or no chat box. I mean its already there in the option just hard to find. Why not have it where the chat box is located to make it simpler.

So you are paying for a VPS or dedicated plan from godaddy? I am not much of a fan of them, and if you have a dedicated plan this site surely does not perform like one. It is not just one aspect that you need to look at though. When you start to alter the code by installing mods and other forum add-ons you can slow the performance of the software itself. Unless you have a beefy dedicated server it is best to stick with the standard vbulletin install. A few template edits here and there are no problem, neither would a gallery. I am also not a fan of the portal on the front page, a real CMS would work and look much nicer.....

I'd bet a paycheck that GD does SHARED hosting....

Dedicated is pretty expensive IIRC. I doubt MikEE's paying for that, but I could be wrong.

Also, MikEE, one of the earlier posts where the mention of getting rid of chat logs and such was probably trying to show the order of the posts; in one post it was X minute, the next it was W minute, then X minute again...

Timestamps shifting probably = lag...

JMO.

They do offer shared, vps, and dedicated packages. They start at $113/Mo for a dedicated celeron (lol) box.

I do not like Plesk, never have. It gets very expensive if you want a good server, unix, and cpanel.

Sorry, I miscommunicated, I think.

What I MEANT to say was that GD does shared hosting PRIMARILY. Meaning the other options are so expensive that "practically" nobody does it, least of all for a "not for profit, hobbyist site".

That was what I meant to say... I should tell my brain to slow down to finger pace...

I liked having the chatbox on every page too...but it lags the entire site really badly.

You can turn it off in the user option. however since its now only on the main page its even slower. IE if I want to chat and surf it would go something like. Chat > go to a thread> then go chat > go to thread > go to chat> all the whole while load time is longer also.

Really no point in posting thread im getting more and more sick on the longer load time because of having to go to many more links just to do the same time as before.

not quite yet...
It seems like the problem is most likely the chat box...
My only option is paying for a dedicated server

I see...I guess that is an option. But lets look at the entire picture first.

Were there any problems before the chatbox was added? What modifications/template edits/add-on's were implemented prior to the slow down?

Also the vbulletin license allows for you to have a TESTING installation as well as your main installation of vbulletin. This allows you to do all of you modification off the board and off your main sql database. Should anything go wrong you have not messed with your actual website and you can troubleshoot accordingly.

Also have submitted a ticket to your hosting provider just to have them check anything out on their end?

If you need any help let me know....

Mike,

I don't think its the chatbox itself it was fine months ago. I maybe had a 20 to 30 sec load time max often it was much faster then now. I think it was after or around the "white page" issue with the main homepage. the main HP is fixed but maybe some minor bug has not.
