So I know there's probably lots of us without chillers or those who at one point had to go through a heat wave without one. I'm curious, what did you guys do to try and keep the tank cool?

I have about 12 32oz bottles of Gatorade in the freezer on stand by. I also fill up a few 1g jugs of RO water n throw them in the fridge so when I top it off daily it's with cold water, it's not bullet proof but helps contain it quite a bit

Run a reverse light cycle. During the day when it's hot the room temp keeps the tanks warm but not hot. At night when it gets cold the lights are on to heat the water. We rarely see our heaters on. No need of chiller(ever) or heaters(most of the time).. Saves $$ ;)

Cool. Last year I had a pretty brilliant idea haha I got an old canister filter I had sitting around and installed it empty of any media to my tank. I placed the canister filter in one of those Styrofoam chillers you buy for $5 at the groceries store and filled it with ice. I placed the canister filter in the cooler along with the ice and just kept re-filling the little cooler with ice. It worked pretty good except I had to keep buying ice and asking someone to keep track of it when I wasn't home.

I'm going thru this heat wave as we speak. I've never used a chiller, although at a cost. I've resorted to running my lights at night also to a limited degree. But this week ive ran my lights for a few hours in the morning and it's lights out for the rest of the day. I do missing sitting on the couch looking at my DT at night timer. I've also been keeping the sump doors open with fan to keep the air moving. Having lots of evaporation, roughly 10g since Monday. I've been lucky to only loose a couple piece and but has been lucky enough to keep my tank steady@82. I need to rethink my approach for the remainder for the summer. It's only gonna get worst...thinking of drill a hole thru a mini fridge and running some tubes thru and use as a chiller. Beats dropping top dollar on a chiller, since a mini fridge is readily available.

Sucks man I'm sorry. Yeah I was in your shoes last year. I'm going to school and I save up for tuition fees so I couldn't afford a chiller. Plus I had just bought my tank leds and that was pretty much all the money I had reserved for the tank. Thanks to the generous people in the forum I bought a chiller here at an awesome price the key is to get them in the winter when no one needs one ;)

Im gonna try and DIY a mini fridge chiller in hopes of controlling it or at least keep it steady. Think it might possibly work? Or plan B, sell my corals and live stock to fund a chiller , and troll the free forum for corals to restock? Crossing my fingers that plan A works...

Not sure how I would control the flow (if it works) to turn on off. Don't want temp to drop and the heater is constantly on...any thoughts

Simple check it out. Get an external thermostat from home depot or even hydor makes one for heaters looks like this

Put the temp probe in the water. Then plug in the pump that you'll have running water through the fridge into the thermostats outlet. So it shuts the pump off once you reach your desired temp ;)
