its not the filter sock that is the problem something else is messing with it maybe something is stuck in the skimmer try cleaning it I know my friends did that after adding some chemicals to kill algae and something was clogged in his skimmer pump

i thought it was common sense to rinse them out with boiling water before use...? for some reason, there's a detergent on all filter socks... the skimmer reacts like crazy depending on how much water flows thru it...

yet, another reason NOT to use filter socks...

It should only foam up for an hour or two at most. There are sometimes oils from the machining process on the socks when first used that cause this. If it bothers you just wash them alone before you use them in the washing machine.

no oils, then it would leave slick in the water... even minute oils can't be mixed in with saltwater... it's some sort of detergent to make sterilize or bleach them... it's harmless for the fish and inhabitants, but still...

my friend soaks them in super hot tap... in a plastic bucket then rinses them in tap... but our tap is bomb... i wouldn't recommend it unless you live like, next door...

this is a well known phenomenon that comes up a lot with new socks or old socks washed in detergents.

felt socks are synthetic and covered in microemulsifying polar oil, mix with ions in saltwater and it becomes a detergent that skimmers react to...

mesh socks had an antibacterial detergent used in their manufacturing cause lotsa bugs can eat mesh

So theoretically hot RODI rinse, and a lot of it, would be best but probably couldnt get it all out...

Also, sock or no sock question comes up on RC twice yearly at least and large polls always come up in favor of using socks by a lot...
