I dont have the cool gadgets for a Saltwater tank since I dont know that much yet about this hobby but here goes :

Tank: Red Sea Reefer 170

Return Pump: Active aqua with 370GPH ( will soon upgrade for a better pump that RedSea reefer recommended, a 530 GPH 2000 LPH.) ---> hope to get some recommendation from you guys.

Skimmer: Reef Octopus 110 SSS. I have'nt dialed it that much yet. Skim not working that much yet so if ever anyone here has a better experience about this skimmer please let me know how to break this in fast.

WaveMaker: Ecotech Mp10w

Light: LED light from a friend. (I am planning to get an ecotech Radion XR15 pro soon..... any other recommendation ?)

I'am planning to have a small refugium in my tank, I have the Finnex external refugium which I am planning to use as a DIY refugium but I havent figured out yet how to use it as a refugium inside my sump.

Is there any other important equipments that you guys can recommend to me that will help me strive with this hobby?

Hope to get some tips and advice from you guys. Thanks!

Are you still cycling the tank? If you are, don’t worry on dialing in the skimmer yet. Don’t even turn on yet.
For return pump, since you think to upgrade, I would consider Vectra S1.
I would suggest getting controller for the heater, if you want to save $, you can use Digital Aquatics Reef Keeper, or some use Runco. I use reef keeper lite and had bad experience with Runco. Most people use Apex.
I don’t use refugium in my RedSea Reefer 350. Instead I use GFO. My reef tank, sps heavy for almost 2 yrs and my sps do well.
What do you use for Auto Top Off (ATO)? This is must have equipment. I like Tunze

Yes Im currently cycling my tank still. Alright I will leave my skimmer alone for awhile, I just got too excited at first when I saw my skimmer doing a good job for 3 days and now it stop working its *** off... =)

About the pump, is Vectra S1 an overkill? is there a way that you can limit its power thru Reef Link?

About the heater, what would a digital aquatic reef keeper gonna do in saving $$? Is it worth it? Apex looks cool but its too expensive also, I dunno if its worth it tho... might need to get more information about it.

Im not familiar with GFO and activated carbon reactor thing yet, I need to get some research about its importance and etc, I thought having a refugium is a good idea knowing that I want to keep a mandarin later on and also does having a refugium helps lower the Nitrate?

about the ATO, I am planning to get one soon since my ATO container is too small I guess. How often do you guys top off your water? looks like I'm topping off too much... I dunno if its normal or not or I should maybe measure it one time just to have a real idea of the amount of water evaporation Im getting a day.

Hey, mrtian97 thanks for the reply... hope to get more pointers and tips from you more!

Temp controller will protect your tank in the event your heater malfunction and stuck in on position and overheat the tank.
My tank Evaporation rate is about 1% -2%, my tanks is about 80 gallonwater volume after the sands, rocks, etc
Vectra S1 should be controllable with reef link.
Depend on your plan of #of fish in your system, you can use refugium or media reactor for gfo for nutrient export.

Hi & welcome to the hobby. nice tank. Like the aquascaping. Your going to have more water evaporate bacause it's a rimless tank. The solutions are to match room & tank temperatures (it will get muggy) or put on a glass cover. Either way, water will still evaporate & I would still setup an ATO system. It will maintain stability & health. Being your first saltwater tank, do take your time with it. Read up & read a lot. When your done reading, read some more. Most important, have some fun. Good luck.

Thanks Resortez, I have ordered the DIY screen Lid from BRS but looks like its purpose is only for the fish to stay inside the tank =)
I will be looking at the ATO Tunze that mrtian97 had recommended.

I have the same tank and really like it. One thing to be careful of is the electronic inside the cabinet. It get pretty moist in there so the electronics are usually first to take a hit. What I did to keep the electronics out is buy a small cabinet from IKEA and place everything in there.

Oh, also, I'm using an Eheim Compact 2000 pump for my tank and it's a perfect fit IMO. I was using a Sicce based pump prior and it was much louder than the Eheim.

Hi Solitude127,would you mind showing me a picture of your sump and your electronic cabinet? Also, how quiet is your return pump?

it's pretty darn quiet. I can hear my vortechs (which I run at 50%) more than the return pump.

I'll take a picture of my cabinet when I get home but the shelf is like this
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90333938/
and I just painted it black.

Nice! lots of ideas popping inside my head. Can you tell me why you have a bottle of beer on the left side of your sump? :)

What is that inside a cube? Bioballs? is that a GFO beside your skimmer?

that's a bottle of vibrant. lol.. In the cube is about a liter of Siporax for more biological filtration. The reactor next to the skimmer is used for GAC

I thought I might post an update in my tank.

Day 15: Been getting some brown spots in my sands so I went to my LFS and ask about it, they say its a brown algae, end up getting a clean up crew and a pair of Ocellaris clown fish.

are this brown algae part of my cycling maturation? I also found my tank to be cloudy, it was clear in the morning but getting back from the LFS with the fish I found my tank to be cloudy.

can't barely see the fish from the other side of the tank.

15 days seems too soon to be adding fish, restrain yourself from adding anymore livestock for a good month at least. Let the tank do its thing and the cycle take its course. Clean up crew is good, stay on top of your water changes every couple weeks and you should be golden!! Hardest thing about saltwater tanks is learning to be patient! Sucks to see your tank empty, but on the long run it'll be better
