My tank just finished cycling. After the first week. The top of all the surface turned brown and silky. I figured algae bloom. It started to go away recently but has this stringy hairy look. I'm holding not haIr algae. WhT do you guys think? I have no cuc in there and will be getting some. It's pretty much everywhere on the top surface that gets lighting.

It looks like the beginnings of hair algae, but I don't see how? Is this all new rock? Or from someone's tank? Also what's your light use per day?

Most of the rock has been in my temp tank. One rock did have hair algae on it. All the white rock was dead and dried before entering system. I am going to take out the rock with hIr algae but I assume it's too late if it is hIr algae? How does hIr Algae spread?

Light and nutrients make algae grow, feed less, have less of a photo period. (Run your lights for a shorter period.) Also what clean up crew do you have for what size tank? I'd suggest turbos they destroy GHA.

Edit, read the entire post, I would definitely try to find blue legged hermits, and some snails, cerith trochus turbo nerite are all good snails.

Try running lights out for 3 days n block off any natural light that hits the tank. Then add your clean up crew and the should have minimal work from that point on.

I'll grab a bunch of different snails.

What bacteria? For the cycle? I just threw in a bunch of my rock from the temp tank and let it run for 3 weeks before putting in some coral and 2 fish. Then I loaded what I had intot he tank. No pee. But I started squirting vinegar in there every other day.

I did do a lights out for 3 days when I noticed the brown film. But I now have fish Nd some coral in there and can't go lights out for 3 days. But I run 8 bulbs t5. 4 on for 8 hours. TotL of 8 bulbs for 6 of those hours. I do get natural sunlight on 1/4 of the tank when the sun is setting. Can't really do anything about it. But those areas don't seem to be affected.
