DISCLAIMER: there’s guys are not reef safe at all. They require a species only tank. They will eat everything’s corals fish inverts and anemones.

That being said they are awesome, to keep in a species only tank.

I actually have one in my reef tank and it grew from a tiny crab into a quite a monster, they resemble red emerald crabs and eventually lose their hair. Their bodies, are slightly wider than that of a regular emerald.

Mine occasionally trims my acros but not as destructive as I expected him to be so I let him be there. Anyways here are the little guys. IMG_3890.jpeg IMG_3893.jpeg
Here is the one I have in my tank.

Are you sure those are gorilla crabs? The one I had was much fuzzier and white. Also it had one large claw and one small if i remember correctly. Even the little ones have no real fuzz compared to the one I had. It was definatly preditory. It came in as a very tinny hitch hiker on some live rock. It got to be a good 2" across the body. It lived in the same hole in the rock for years. Some how the hole just kept getting bigger to accommodate it.

These guys are definitely hairy and some gorilla crabs don’t have hair anywhere but their legs. By the way. I was just reading an article about them and it says “What’s more, once they’ve taken a liking to a spot, they will actively scrape away at your live rock or coral, enlarging the lair enough to fit them more comfortably” that’s probably the reason that the hole was getting larger

Clearly it was enlarging the hole somehow. When i first realized it was in my tank the hole was baby 3/8" it had to me 2" when i got rid of it.
