So I have like 150lbs of sand to wash for my build. I've read a few different methods for cleaning the sand that are all basically the same...wash with the hose, dump water until it's clear. And then they all say to put the sand in your tank. This is where my question lies...

So I just used hose water to wash all this sand, the sand is now wet, and I'm just gonna stick it in my tank? Won't the water that's still on the sand be bad for my tank? This is a new tank with no livestock and maybe the volume (~140g total) waters it down enough but can I really just put freshly rinsed sand in the tank with no repercussions?

I don't think I can wait for it to dry :a28: but I want to go in knowing what I'm doing. Who's used rinsed sand using the hose rinse method? Anything to watch out for?

that water is very minimal. i would had washed it with hose then rinse with rodi
So, rinse until it's clean and then give it a final dive in RODI? I guess that would make sense...

What do you think would be the risk of skipping the RODI rinse?

I won't be able to wait. 150lbs of sand would take forever and considering the rain the last couple of days...
Really I'm just super eager to get the tank full of water. I've been working on this build almost daily for three weeks and am ready to see it all setup.

I know, I know, patience. But man, I'm so ready!

it would take a long time to dry out and it would take a lot of water to rinse with with RODI to get all of it.

just drain as much hose water as you can from it and you should be ok.

Is the sand not brand new? I would stay away from hose water, i rinsed some sand out in the sink for a little nano when i first started and i got some nasty diatoms. I would just use ro. Not worth the headache.

thats where the word tds comes in. total dissolve solid. your water evaporate out but the just stay with the sand. so it right or dont do it at all. short cuts in this hobby leads to headache.

For some reason this thread reminds me on Lindsey's threads. She has a problem......has an idea on what she wants to do.......ask for help......when they tell her to do something different she has some lame excuse why that wont work.......then does what she had in mind anyway! hahaha

BTW, I don't think that the water in the sand will be an issue, just make sure you try to drain as much as you can before putting it in.

Dude you get diatoms, n that's your tanks way of saying hey I'm cycling and almost done.
Yeah for normal semi clean stuff now dirty it all up with hose water and you have diatoms x 10. Would you ever dump 2 gallons of tap water in to your tank? Doesn't sound like a good Idea.

Come on seriously to rinse 150lbs of sand correctly would be using a whole bunch of rodi. There is nothing wrong with using hose water and what's left after you drain is minimal. If you want to pull out whatever might be left just run some gfo while cycling. Done deal. Now if it's previous live sand that you are rinsing with fresh you will have a crap load of die off in the sand which is no biggie it will actually help with the cycle by getting it kick started any real nasties will get pulled out by the skimmer

I used the hose to rinse the sand in both the tanks I had... 75g and 180g. Never an issue.

In the end I'm going to thoroughly rinse with hose water and do a final rinse with RO. It seems like there's plenty of opinion that I'd be fine without the final rinse but if I'm gonna do it I may as well do it well. Here's to lugging and rinsing 150lbs of sand...
