Does anyone have a glass cutter I can borrow? I want to cut the top brace on a tank I just got. It is made out of glass. I think the fastest way to get rid of this brace is to cut it off.

I think I understand what you guys are trying to tell me. Cutting the braces will reduce the strength of the tank. I took that into consideration, but I still want to cut it off. Let me splain, why I think the tank will be ok. 1. I see plenty of rimless tanks that have enough strength to withstand the water pressure. 2. My tank will still have a black brace around it. 3. I am going to cut 4, 3x3 pices of L shaped glass and place one on each corner. Thus still having the same cross sectional area bonded on the glass.

Interesting, please post follow up pics i would like to follow this. FYI, aren't they just siliconed in, can't you just just go at it with a razor? Also any chance you have a par meter to help measure the light differences? I am very curious if that glass center support really makes that much of a difference.

Your tank likely was built with thinner glass and NEEDS to have a center brace. Rimless tanks are built with much thicker glass in order to negate the need for a center brace or eurobracing.

This is a factor I did not consider, tanks! (Get it...tanks haha) Anyway, my tank is 1/4 inch thick glass. Does anyone happen to know what the thickness of glass is for rimless tanks, size4x2x2? I don't know whay the thickness is for rimless. I tried to read articles on this topic but they were all regarding choosing the thickness of glass based on size.

1/4" is thin for a 4x2x2 even with a brace! Don't do it man, you're asking for trouble. A rimless tank with those dimensions would use at least 1/2" glass.

My Tank Build

What so the tank is currently full. Please video it if u cut the brace. So if it fails u can splain(i think splain is suppose to be explain, hey but what do I know I'm just a dumba** truck driver) to other idiots why it's a bad idea.

Hey I'm just saying.

Are you sure the glass is only 1/4"? I would think at minimum it was 3/8" even with the center brace.

My 4x2x2 is 1/2" with eurobracing to give you an idea.

But yeah I don't think Id be able to get a good nights sleep if I did that.

Yea splain is explain in Spanglish. The tank is empty I just got it, UPGRADE! If I end up doing it I will take a video and show it, on this thread. I don't mind if people disagree with me, but give me a practical reason why it's a dumb *** idea.

I just assumed the tank was 1/4" because that what the previous owner mentioned. I have not verified.

Measure that glass. And the brace isn't necessarily going to be the same thickness, so measure the vertical edges.

I wouldn't be happy unless that was at least 5/8" glass. Maybe 1/2" if tempered. A 4/2/2 will have lots of weight pushing out on those four foot long panels.

If you still want to get rid of that glass panel, you can try replacing it. When I broke mine, I used some mahogany:

That was a long term test. It's been very successful. So this weekend I'm building new strips that are narrower made from aluminum clad with mahogany to match the stand.

Thanks for the input. The reason I'm tanking off the braces is so there would be no light obstruction.

I want to elaborate on the design idea I have, and when I went to AoA for the SCRK meeting last nigh I was inspired by their 4x4 tank. I think it is time for me to start a build thread. First, let me ask if anyone has or where I can buy silicone for glass, not the plug a seal type but the strong type used to glue the tank glasses together. Name, grade, store that carries the product, price, any info would be appreciated.
