Using the following input parameters

Tank Length = 48 inches
Tank Width = 18 inches
Tank Height = 15 inches
Tank volume is calculated as

Tank Volume = 56.1 Gallons

Sump tanks are a solution to the problem of having exposed heaters, wires, etc. It's also provides a reef system with more water volume and better filtration since the detritus will settle in the sump tank rather than your display. I had this sump installed underneath my 240 for 2yrs. So to answer your question, there is no real answer, sumps are pretty much as big as u can go for the space u have available. My girlfriend has a 40 gallon sump connected to her 10gl nano.

ok my next question is what is the sump to tank ratio? if i get a 200 gallon dt how big should my sump be?
If you have a fish room then go as big as that room would allow. Though my tank is 220 gallons if I had the space I would have three 275 gallon bins plumbed together as a sump. One for a DSB from where the drain comes down, the middle for a refugium, and the third for skimmer/return pump. You can never have too much water volume for your tank imho.

true more the better but it also cost more to heat or cool that much water. how much maintenance cost can you afford.

how thick is the glass? any meds used in the sump? is it food grade?
