As a LED guys for too many years now. I've always stuck to basic Blues and Whites because it has worked well. Just trying to get some opinions about this whole full spectrum debate on Green and Red LEDs.

What are the opinions of those on this forum who have switched from basic two colors or other types of lighting to these 'full spectrum-almost.' I want to weigh the out before making the switch.

Colors better? Growth?

They don't promote growth IMO
Its for our eyes only as they enhanced the color of the coral, specially the fish because blue LEDs makes the fish looks really weird but if you like the corals to grow better blue LEDs is all you need.

I had the same experience Lawrence did. Except I hated the way it looked.

If u want to add full spectrum, try adding 400-420nm violet LEDs. And dont just add a couple, add a strip of 20. They dont put out a whole lot of visible light, but its supposed to help color and growth. Also I have seen people add different kelvin whites (6500,10000k). Just stay away from 4500. I think it's too yellow, almost gold.

Okay. So UV....makes sense. But so does this..

all single ended my bulbs are doubled glassed. They are double glassed to get rid of the UV.

So I'm thinking how successfully everyone is with single ended mh (mogul) back in the day and yet no uv. Now I need UV? I'm not buying into it yet....

I have no UV on my tank. Im running 420nm ultra violet. It's not uv.

I agree with u, I don't think uv is needed

I'm running deep red and cyan along with Neutral whites and UV violets oh and royal blues now. Before it was cool whites and royal blues only. All I can say is big difference in color and better growth with some of my corals. I did cover up my cyan and deep red led and didn’t notice a change in the colors of my coral but did get rid of the annoying pink that the red led put in the back of my tank. I change half of the tank LED with no reds and cyan and half with red and cyan to see if it makes a difference.

IMO the biggest part of the change for me was the neutral white from cool whites which the neutral whites have the red spectrum in it. And the UV violets.

Not sure if you can see the pink against the back wall but LED is hard to photograph

I'm a proponent of a good base of neutral white (4000-4500k) and Royal Blue. I only use Philips Luxeon Rebels because they have a high CRI (Color Rendering Index). The GOOD QUALITY neutral whites should fill in that red spectrum. I also supplement with Cool Blue and Cyan to help with the greens and balance out the purple from the royal blues. I also add as many Violets (420-430nm) I can afford to the mix.

The less color, the less disco you have.

I'm hoping to have my evil cluster setup in the next few weeks. My LDD boards are arriving from China on Monday! =D
