Green brittle star

ive searched the internet for an answer but so far not liking what im reading..
maybe I can get a straight answer here.. ray:
I got a green brittle star just last night and this morning I woke up to a big hole in it just 11 hrs after purchase and within 2 hrs the leg came off...
Now this is how he looks... so disappointed is he a zombie walking around my tank?
Any info much appreciated

Its sure doesnt... this just annoys me so much not knowing!!

Typically I would agree but I have no fish, not one!! just hermit crabs and snails, and the hermit crabs will not go near him

Wish I could put the blame on someone but no shrimp, no fish

No I did not, I was told there was no need to. Plus my water is from the shop I bought it from so the owner said just pop him in and he would survive my water parameters because they are tough, and I really trusted his advice, so I added his bag so the temps could match added a little water at a time to his container then after 3 hours of this I popped him in and went to bed woke up to what looked like someone sat eating at him all night ... ah ive been guessing this was the case, but my hermit crabs and snails wont go near him and watching him he is just falling apart... You think its the water?
