Any one of you guys using a ground probe in your tank? I was talking to Greg Carrol and some other reefers about it and they suggested I get one. What are your thoughts on it and experience if any? I'm not feeling any stray voltage in my tank but I figured I'd get one just to be safe. I never knew they had these things so I thought it was kinda cool.

I'm looking into getting this one from marine depot

If anyone is using one, can you state what brand it is please. Thanks in advance! :)

I shut down my tank recently, but I always had one. If your fish have strange marks , like bite marks, you could use a ground probe. they are cheap and any brand will work just fine.

Will the stray voltage give them bite mark type of markings? I never knew that. Thanks for the reply btw!

Anyone else use one of these ground probes?

KAT....Grounding probes work and will prevent you from getting shocked and possibly killing livestock in your tank.

With the probe you are getting you have to make sure your outlet itself is grounded. I dont know how to check for this but I personally know some of my outlets are not grounded due to the age of my house. So if you plug it into an outlet that is not grounded....essentially its not going to work

Thanks Jay! Do you have one you recommend btw? My house was built in 2005 so the outlets should be grounded I think lol!

After getting the tingling sensation from my tank, possibly because of a malfunctioning return pump, this is a must-have. It was NOT a pleasant surprise when the water felt strange the first time AND the second time before I realized, in my incredulous state of mind, I had just experienced a mild electric shock.

You should not use a ground probe without having your equipment powered through a GFCI outlet. Here's an article that explains why:

aquarist-found-dead

The benefit of a probe is that it will trip the GFCI (after a fault) before you place your hand into the tank.

A probe may trip your GFCI when you are not home...which can be a good thing if it prevents fire.

Thanks for the reply! I'm really glad I found out about it cuz I totally think it's a great piece of equipment we all should have imo :)

I'll be adding one to my sump area. Do you guys think I need a separate one for my display? I have 2 mp40's in there.

It wouldnt hurt. What if something fell in while you were cleaning the tank?

I place the grounding probe in through the overflow teeth so it is not so unsightly.
