Anybody currently hanging their ATI fixture from the ceiling? Unfortunately I have no ceiling studs near my tank and hesitant to install it directly into the drywall. The fixture is only the 24 inch fixture.
You don't need studs. The fixture is, not that, heavy. Just need to get yourself butterfly anchors. I have had 36" 6 lamps n 24" 8 lamps on nothing but drywall
I did a cross beam in the rafters and ensured that the hanging kit was drilled into wood. Over time, the drywall will weaken and IMO, the drywall anchors will give over time.

I have two ATI fixtures. Both are 5ft with 8 bulbs. Both hung from dry wall. No problems. In fact one is the ATI hybrid, which is heavy, about 40 lbs. Your mileage may vary.
I was too nervous to do it with my 4' 8 bulb ATI. Heavy fixture over a glass tank of water seemed to risky for me. I did the same as solitude.
Found my anchor points and marked them
Drilled a pilot hole
Stuck something in the holes so I could find the spot in the attic
Measured the gap from stud to stud
Cut 2 - 2x4 to length
Wedged 2x4 pieces over the pilot holes and nail or screw them in place.
Mount your ATI.
Probably okay with a 24" but I constantly was lifting and lowering my fixture to access the tank. Was somewhat of a PITA but I was glad I did it.

Ive hung pretty much all the sizes ATI from dry wall only with toggle bolts. You will need the 3/16 size. Lowes sells them in a 2 pack for a couple bucks. HD sells them in a huge pack which is a lot unless you plan on using them all.
Hey Mike if you can access the attic to install a support beam to anchor into that will be the safest bet. Not worth dropping a $400-$1k light into a tank of something doesnt go right over time.
If drywall cut out to install you can always get a nice custom piece that's designed to look like the cables were meant to come out of the ceiling like a molding with screwed up the support as well.
