I've always battled high nitrates with the large fish loads I like to keep in my fish only system. I recently decided to try bio pellets. Well over about a months time doing half recommended dose to start and the other half two weeks later I went from 100+ ppm to testing 0 ppm on my api kit and 3 ppm on my salifert kit. Since then though I have experienced a few fish losing apetite and have lost a few fish. I'd like to hear other people's experiences with this sort of thing with bio pellets, preferably with fish only tanks.

I don't think fish carry too much about nitrates. But the bacterial colony that's been created may have effected the oxygen level or just bad karma
My ph has dropped actually.

I think the biggest concern here is how quickly they dropped. Even though nitrates in high levels can hurt things, a fast significant change hurt too. Did it take 2 weeks to get them to 0 or is that just when you happened to test again?

Honestly have had so much on my plate recently I don't even remember if I tested before adding the second dose of pellets 2 weeks in or not, just at the 4 week mark.

I ran bio pellets and gfo on my 135 fowlr. Ran it for years without any adverse affects. I wouldn't run a fish only system without bio pellets ever again.

Most would say yes. 0 nitrate will starve your corals. Colors will pale, growth will slow, and the corals will eventually die.

I'm going to test with api just in case, but I used the red sea kit before and it did give me readings of 2ppm in Dec. and Feb.

Buy fish, feed them, they poop and create nutrients. I've also heard of some ppl dosing nitrate
