Sorry to hear! This is a common issue in this hobby it seems. Get your self a apex JR. to turn off your heaters incase this happens again...

just realize that the ranco controller should be able shut off a heater if it gets to hot, i just always had it set up for a fan and never bother to learn its other features, time to google and youtube!

Be careful with that water. It's possible paly toxins were released from your polyps with that heat. Make sure the area is well ventilated and use gloves to get the water and livestock out. Paly poisoning is NO joke.

if you have the dual you can turn on and off with heater you dont need a apex. a old school ac jr is good enough,

Sorry to hear this. I'm just wondering if 85 degrees is really that hot? When I had my 30 gallon, there would be days that my tank's temp would rise into the low 80's and I never lost any livestock or coral. I don't have a chiller on my 120, but then gagin, I live a block away from the beach, so I really don't have to worry about big temperature swings or extremes. I hope your fish are just hiding.

+1 on the Apex. You will never regret having a tank controller and all the redundancy they offer!

Best of luck,

Mike

yeah i don't think 85 would of been a big deal since i keep my tank temp at 80 but it crept up to the 90's i will raise the temp on the water to try to math that of my tank to avoid another temperature swing. thanks guys.

There is a $20 solution to this problem. EBay has $20 temp control plus your heater has 1. That's like double protection. I have been OK for the last 3years.

Search eBay for temperature controller like the stc1000 model better than the $17 ones. Can't do link w this stupid tablet at the moment.

this is what my tank looks like as of today, it sucks looking at an empty tank... DSC04250.jpg yesterday I found and pull out my Wyoming clown fish. I did find about 6 hermit crabs and a giant snail that survive the seafood soup lol
