Hello from Newport Beach

The Nazi's over at ReefCentral chased me away because apparently I used the word "***" in a post....and that offended the Gestapo female mod (I have nothing against female mods). Apparently that's considered a "cussword" and apparently I didn't apologize profusely while she called me out on it in the post.

I then allegedly proceeded to tell her a few things via private message and the next thing you know I was in the ReefCentral concentration camp. I think the thing that got her most was when I asked her if her husband gave her permission to be on the internet, moderating a forum.

One of the good folks over at a pretty big fish store in Long Beach told me about this forum, said you guys were cool and suggested I join.

So here I am.

I'm from Newport Beach. I got a JBJ 24ga Nano tank with LED lights. It's one of the newer versions.

It's ~6mos. old and has a variety of small frags. I have two DaVinci clowns and a starfish and a Maxima clam. Assorted clean up crew and a huge torch coral that I bought today. Water parameters are all good.

I also have a Tunze skimmer (small collection cup), but I'm having issues setting it up properly.....the water level in the back 3 chambers is very hard to keep "stable" and eventually after a few hours....the pump starts spitting micro bubbles into the tank. I had it set up once before, but then took it down due to other reasons. So when I find some patience, I'm going to attempt to set up the skimmer again.

Nice to meet everyone and "no", I'm not a troll....I just don't like overzealous moderators as I used to own a very huge deals forum (affiliate marketing) and as the Admin I would instruct my mods to be cool. I own an SEO company for a living so I kinda sorta know what I'm talking about when it comes to the internet.

I'm a total n00b at reeftanks though....I'm still reading as much as I can and trying to learn.

I ditched my Hyder nano skimmer because it kept clogging. I made my own. It works much better.

SEO is "optimizing" websites to get them ranked high in Google. We specialize in online reputation management.....so let's pretend you own Bob's Plumbers in Irvine....and for the past 10 years you have had nothing but great clients who loved you. Ok, so I'm going to post a pic of my tank.....but let it be know that I'm using my cell phone camera and my golf buddy who's also a professional photographer is in the hospital getting surgery on his arm.....otherwise I would have had him come over and show me how to take a good pic of the tank.

Also, I'm giving away the yellow tang in the background to a good home (180gal tank) but for now I'm keeping him while he's a baby. I realize the reef central people get anal about that kinda stuff and I'm all about the quality of life for the fish....but a small fish like this will be happy in my tank for a few months until he grows a bit bigger. I take religious care of my tank and water change every week and am on top of my tank husbandry.

Also.....since my tank is ~6 months old.....you're going to see a ton of bare rock. So if you guys have any suggestions on what corals to buy.....I'm all ears. I'm trying to figure out how to make my tank look very stocked with coral....but at the same not not stack the corals on top of each other so that they have "chemical warfare" and kill each other.

Also....the maxima clam on the middle rock is a very deep blue.....the purple color isn't the right color. Camera is "off" in color.

Where the clown on the far right is....right behind him is my frogspawn. To the right of that is a small mushroom frag. Maxima clam in the middle....I forget the name of the "grass" type coral right above the maxima...."polyp" maybe? It has purple goo stuff that the "coral grass" grows out of. I'm attempting to get it to grow on my back wall to replace the ugly black color. Work in progress.

Far top right is another mushroom frag then right beneath that are 3 candy canes and right beneath that is my other torch bottom right hand corner.

Far left corner is my beloved Zoa....I have had that thing since the day my tank got done cycling "as such" and it has gotten 3x as big as when I bought it.

Then in the middle is my new prize possession....the huge torch coral. I'm hoping it will host my clowns.

I should also mention that I think I'm a zoa lover. I like frogspawns and torches....but I just like zoas. They seem to be very hardy and they're very colorful to look at.

I'm looking for some other good zoas but can't seem to find any in the local fish stores....and I have been to almost every single one (including the guy on Magnolia....north of the 405. They run a pretty cool shop and that's where I got the small torch in the bottom right hand from).

Nice clam. Lol. I have one that's electric blue from above but dull purple from the front of the tank too.

Zoas and palys are a good starting point.

I love compliments!!!

But in all honesty, when the tang gets even a little bit bigger....if by then I don't have a huge tank in my house, then I'm going to re-home him to a responsible reef keeper with a huge tank. But for now, he's a baby and he's in good hands.

Are there any good local shops in the OC area that have a good selection of zoas? Or could possibly get that one (assuming that's the proper color). I realize light has a lot to do with it and I'm running LED's (stock ones).

As a newcomer myself to this site and the hobby all I can say is WELCOME and I think you will like it here, I know I have. Also feel the same as you on the incredible expense this hobby can be, I have a 28g JBJ and while I didnt spend quite as much as you (I really hunted for deals on used supplies and people getting out of the hobby), I am really wanting a bigger 100g+ tank, but unless I can come up on a big inheritance or lottery winning I dont see it happening anytime soon.

Tony don't listen to reefbozo he will never offer u a helping hand and will expect the world in return and pgr11 character is gayer then a rainbow. He will cough a fill on your man cans the first chance he gets. And for me I'm some dbag that never responded to PMs or text messages when I'm giving away free stuff, cause I think your a creditor.

But hey that tang is tiny he's fine for know. Gots to be like easyE and say f*** the tang police. I did and have 5 medium size tangs in a 180. That fight all day long, but I like them so they stay.

Also I've been banned from RC for starting a thread about Tom Leykis. So u ain't alone here. I think like 20% if not more of us have been banned from there. Even the creator of this site was banned from RC.
