So I got a great deal on an Innovative Marine Nuvo 16 nano to house my clownfish and softies. I'm looking for a stand, but haven't been able to find anything suitable, so I'm planning to build one. I read a few tank/stand threads here lately and you guys are building some beefy stuff with 2x4's and going all out. I was wondering if I would also need to use such construction or can I pick something lighter to build with? The tank will weigh at least 130 lbs. and maybe a few more pounds when you add live rock. I want to try building a taller stand (a little lower than eye level viewing) than what ever the standard height is. Any suggestions or advice?

I'm in the middle of my a stand myself. I used 4x4 for mine but for a bigger tank. I recommend going with 2x4 just because they are cheap and very strong. It is probably over kill but what the hell. Depending on how you want to finish it, a stand for that size tank should cost anywhere from $60-$120.

A good rule of thumb is a fully stocked reef will weigh 10lbs/gallon. That includes water/sand/rock/livestock. Add on whatever beefy equipment and they can get pretty heavy. Aim to support at least 160lbs and you should be fine. I second what Corey said, just overkill it. I would rather spend an extra $30 on lumber and have a heavy stand with the peace of mind that it will last than a flimsy stand that might break. That's why I went with a steal stand.

Yeah, you guys are right. I'll go with the 2x4's. I know nothing about carpentry. What is the process of sanding/water proofing/staining/painting a stand like this?

My dad could help you build a steel stand with doors. Painted or stained if you want it wood skinned. Just pay for the materials and give my dad some cash for his time, shop, and wisdom ha

He loves welding and is always looking for a project. This is what he built me:
