Need to decide between these two pics. Let me know whether you prefer the top down acro shot or the yellow coris (fish) shot.

Top down. There's more in focus and you get an unusual perspective displaying growth patterns. Although, both have very nice composition.

I like the corsis pic but have to say the top down pic is better just because the focus is better

Top down for me. What type of photography equipment are you using?
Hey thanks everyone for your input.

I am using a 18-55 mm zoom lens (kit lens---it came with the camera) on a sony nex 7 camera. Because of the camera and whatever physics are involved, it makes the lens like a conventional 25-85 mm lens. Unfortnately, I have not figured out how to get both depth of field and slow my darn fish down.

I made a DIY box for the top down pics from acrylic scrap pieces that were left over when I replumbed and redrilled my sump.

I have a bowfront tank which makes close up or macro photography very challenging as well because of the distortion of the curved glass.

It was because of this reef forum that I decided to buy the camera. I have not had a SLR camera in like 20 plus years. With my old point and shoot, I could only get blue pics, the white balance was goofy

I vote for the top down shot although it seems pretty unanimous already so my vote isn't gonna make a big difference.

What is the pic for or did I miss that? Are you entering a contest?

Great pic. I like the top down one as well. It's hard to get a open depth of field and a fast shutter speed. They don't really go hand in hand unless you use a lens that is wide. Definitely try out some manual legacy lenses when you have some spare cash

Great picture dude! I'm a sucker for top down. Also bought a DSLR camera for the first time cuz of this hobby. The more pix I took the better I got at it. Taking pix of the fish tank is so much harder than "regular" pix.
