Im not too sure about Nikon...? As I am a Canon man, however, they do make quality cameras. I get a bunch of people that ask me about why I choose a Canon over a Nikon and the answer is actually pretty simple.

When I got my Canon it was my first DSLR, so I didn't really know very much about the settings and so forth. Even though both cameras do the exact same thing, the layout or how you access certain functions is completely different. It would be like talking about Mac vs PC. They both technically do the same thing (Internet, Photos, Music and so on and compute things). However, their layout is very different. People who have used PC there whole lives and then suddenly jump on a Mac and are forced to use it know what I am talking about.

As for what camera is better, that just depends upon Model and personal preference. As far as general usability, I personally found Canon to be much easier to use and in the camera world this is what they are known for. To give an analogy Canon is like a Mac as far as user interface. As for Nikon they are supposedly the (more professional camera) and that is what they are known for in the camera word. As far as user interface they are more like a PC (where you have to access certain features in order to access others). An example (Not saying this is actual, but for reference) in order to access say the ISO setting you would have to access say camera settings first. Remember this is not exactly true, but it indeed displays that at least to me, Nikon's are not as user friendly for the beginner.

There seems to be a common misunderstanding that buying a DSLR camera will give you better pictures. To that...Yes and No. Yes, they will technically give you better quality pictures with more vivid detail. But like anything, it really just depends upon the users skill - eye - and weather or not they know how to use there camera to its ability. When talking about a "Quality Picture," one tends to think that because it is a "Hi-Res" photo it is a quality photo, but this is not always the case. If you take in to account that distance, aperture, ISO, the subject, flash or no flash, white balance and most importantly (Especially in Reef and Coral shots) Lighting affect the outcome of the picture. It really becomes a science to take a quality picture.

Many people tell me, "Well, my camera can take just as quality of a picture and I have a little 4mp point and shoot." "Why spend all the money on a DSLR?" Well, to answer that correctly, I would give them a scenario such as... Take a photo one with a P&S and one with a DSLR, now blow each photo up to 10' x 10'. It will be obvious as to why a DSLR will rein king. Even in "green Square mode," which is where the camera does everything for you a P&S won't even come close to the detail of the DSLR. Now take the P&S off of the green square mode and it will nearly be impossible to take the exact same photo, let alone come even close to the DSLR.

As far as lenses go, if it were me I would buy a cheaper camera body and spend the extra money on a better lens. It is the lens that actually makes the picture. A good quality lens will produce a better image compared to MPs. A good lens for taking coral shots is some where around 100mm Macro. Both Nikon and Canon actually make 100mm Macro lenses, but they are quite expensive for the nicer one, some where around $1,000. They also make a 105mm lens, but they are about the same price.

If you have anymore questions regarding cameras feel free to ask, I will try and answer it to the best of my ability. Please remember I am still learning as well, I personally recommend going to a camera store and asking them what type of setup you should go with for a beginner trying to shoot corals and macro shots. Write down what they tell you and then price it out. I recommend going online for DSLRs and accessories it will save you a pretty penny in the end. They also have great starter packages and deals that will help you get all the essentials you need with out spending way over.

The biggest tip I can give you is, shoot often and shoot a bunch. At anyone time, I will shoot about 4 to 6 shots of the same piece or shot so that I can make sure I have different angles and lighting and settings to guarantee that I get the shot I am looking for. This can be tricky when shooting fish and corals. It will test your patience, but that is half the fun! Happy Shooting!
