Going to be adding a HOB refugium to my tank and wanted a little advice on what to put into it. I did some research and saw that people were split on sand. Some say rubble rock, some say large rock. Algae is a given. Would I need to add some kind of flow or would the water intake be enough? Can I move my skimmer to it or would that just suck all the pods out? Can I put some hermit crabs in or bad idea? Thanks for the help!

I say rubble rock for more surface area and more area for pods to grow along with macro algae. I'd skip the sand because you really won't get a deep enough sand bed for it to be beneficial

yep mike is fully, correct...as far as skimmer if you add it then it would need to be at the beginning but still not ideal to hook it directly to the fuge IMO

IMO I would put the heater and skimmer In a separate bay. You won't get enough flow In a fuge for the heater to be effective. The skimmer would add too many bubbles that will only irritate all the organisms your trying to protect in the refugium. Your heater should be In a high flow area and always separate the skimmer in a separate bay away from the refugium.

Hermits are the devil.

Low flow would be best.

Chaeto and live rock rubble on the bottom. No sand there would be no point as Mike said.
