I recently bought a used tank that was neglected for a couple months. It was in pretty bad shape. I started off by cleaning the aquarium the best I could with paper towels and some scrubbers (being very careful not to scratch the glass). After that I setup the entire aquarium including the sump and return pump with 30% vinegar to 70% water. I let the tank run for about a week with the vineger. After that all the tough gunk left on the sides of the aquarium came off with the wipe of my bare hand. I then drained the vinegar mixture out and ran the aquarium with 100% water to get all the vinegar residue out of the aquarium. The end result was a sparkling clean aquarium. Im sure there are many ways to go about it but I hope I was of some help to you. Good luck!

My 75 I started with had a TON of coraline and hard water "scum" on the glass that even the razor blade wasn't too happy with... Bought a bottle of Muriatic acid, some gloves and a sponge... dabbed the acid on the stains, let it sit 10 minutes and then wiped it down with the sponge soaked in acid, and it looked as good as new. Threw a box of baking soda into the tank and filled it with water to neutralize the acid, rinsed it a few times and it was perfect!
