My big tank is in my cold living room. My 2 Heaters (500W) turn on all the time. I am thinking to burn wood in my fireplace to keep my tank and house warm and save some energy, but haven't use fireplace before. Any other options guy?

BTW: anyone know where to get cheap wood?

Iv heard, and I could be wrong here but fireplaces near tanks can really fluctuate the ph. Just a thought like I said may be complete untrue but something to think about.

Adam, It might if the CO2 level in the room is high. I got that problem in my old room, so I moved the skimmer air intake outside to get oxygen.

Cheap wood = chop down a tree. Or come to my house. I still have a lot. I'll have a ton more after I chop the 2 huge trees down. Probably have 20 years worth of firewood. I have a lile that's dry as hell and ready to burn. Come soon before it storms and gets wet.

That's the way to go. Set it and forget it, that way its only kicking on to bump up a degree. People make the mistake of turning their ac/heat off during the day. Takes way more energy too heat or cool a house by 10F than to have it constantly maintaining a reasonable temp.

Wow thats real hard to hit a bill on gas. My tank is next to a window and it does fine. I keep my Heater and Tenp Probe in the main display to keep a constant temp.
Sorry Looks like it pops on more often
It turned on 5-6 times at 67 degrees and now at 70 it turns on 2-3. U can see where I made the change. That drop was on a water change.

Halides on at night, the corals will be happy with the extra light and the tank will enjoy the free heat. I say free because 500 watts of heaters is expensive and sounds like way too much for your tank.

What about when your sleeping though?
I just burn 1 small log bro. just keep little warm in that area. (also have a bucket nearby so I can bring it outside and put into my bbq drill to burn out)
good to know. My tank is near the window. Will move skimmer air intake outside if needed.

I used to have free heat from 12 x 54W T5HO, but no more corals or Halides = no heat.
I hate to see the heater on all the time. sometime I boil top off water and pull it in. The temp goest up faster that way than heater. hahaha

I had to add two 300W heaters to my tank this winter, last year I was fine with just two 300W, now I have 4.
