So I stop in at a local coral shop. They say they have competitive pricing. Ok, well they do its not too bad. I tell them I like a few pieces and want to see what they look like in a fews days to see if they got more color. Shop says well when it gets more color then the price will go up. I am missing something here. Its not like this stuff is turning into a spectacular piece. The sps is just starting to show what color it will be after seeing it brown. I originally thought they were joking but when I went to buy a frag they raised the price. Im not sure how I feel about this. What are your thoughts?

That's lame, I'd go elsewhere.

Edit: The thing is if they are trying to color up the coral it wouldn't be for sale now would it? My take on it is the coral came in looking bad and they are trying to offload it before it looks even worse.

makes sense that they do it...doesn't make sense that they say it. after all, when a coral is nice and colored up, a shop will sell it for top dollar. and when it's brown, sometimes they put it in clearance section just to move it out.

Color is money, I was at Rap and a vendor was selling frags for $25 each, Jason Fox bought a couple and said they were hot, vendor raised the price to $200 per frag, Crazy world!

Agree 100% A coral is always worth more the better the color. Look at the bright side. at least they were honest.

Does a fully colored Reef Raft Acro cost more than one that isn't as fully colored?

lol things don't color up in a day or 2, that sounds weird. Of corse prices go up as they become more amazing but i wouldn't say in a couple days and @tangwhich is right they may do that but they shouldn't say that. seems lame

This is part of the hobby that is so sad. (price manipulation based on current lighting conditions, labeling living corals with a store or person's name, etc.)

Thank God I like Yellow Tangs and hammer corals and not trying to impress fellow sausage swingers

To put things in perspective:
I wonder how the AKC would react to some breeder calling their litter "Leonard's Labradors" or "Tran Terriers"

Color definitely sells. It takes time and money to color up acros and I would not take that away from a shop. On the other hand we are not talking about anywhere close to colored up but just a glimpse of what the color would be. In my scenario, the acro still brown but the tips starting to get some color. I just feel like it was a lame way to mark something up. If thats the case then move it into another section. Im not going to share where it was because I am not attempting to blast them, if you experience it then you have found the place.

Sorry to say but that's business and there are many shops that will do it. Same with fish.... price goes up the longer it stays alive and even high when they eat dry foods but you will get a discount when they just bag the fish up from the wholesellers. There are a few shops that will keep their price the same weather or not it colors up or fishy are eating.

Back in the days when tail spotted blennies were hard to get and every LFS was charging $30-$50. I found a place where the charge $18.99 and I ask the worker these are hard to get and he replied "I know". So I ask him why aren't you selling them higher and he reply "I'm happy charging my regular price of $18.99"

Every LFS will try to sell turd colored maricultured colonies and urge you to buy them before they color up and the price goes up. But chances are that they won't and they'll continue to be looking like turds because that's what most maricultured SPS are.
