So I know that in the last few years people have been using hydrogen peroxide to target attack hair algae on rocks, corals etc.

I was talking with a friend who owns a LFS in Las Vegas about using it to treat algae as I have a 400 gallon system here that has a ton of hair algae everywhere. He told me that he had actually started dumping the hydrogen peroxide directly into the tank and that it works great! The only thing is that it will kill shrimps.

I was a bit skeptical but since I am breaking down this tank I decided to give it a try and see what happens. It seems weird to me since my understanding is that adding hydrogen peroxide will function almost like an ozone. In that it will effect the ORP and it kills the algae. If that is true then why wouldn't it kill the symbiotic zooxanthellae algae that lives in the coral? It was suggested that the corals tissue acts as a semipermeable membrane that doesn't allow it to negatively effect the zooxanthellae.

So I left a all the corals in the system and directly added 32 oz of hydrogen peroxide to the tank Thursday morning. After a few hours much of the LPS began to recede dramatically. Many of the corals began to slime up. After the fourth hour the corals did not look happy at all so I decided to run activated carbon in the tank. After a few hours the corals all looked much better.

Now Monday morning I would say 75% of all the hair algae is gone! I am amazed. I am going to dose another 16 oz today and see what happens.

Has anyone else tried this before? FYI the 16 oz bottles of hydrogen peroxide cost me 48 cents each at wallmart.

I know I suck for not providing any pictures.

Buy an extra bottle and dye your beard a nice platinum blond. Can you list some of the types of corals you had in there? This would be really cool if it is a succesful method.

I never put in the my tank, but I've scrubbed rocks with it outside. Whenever it gets on the corals, the corals get irritated, but they bounce back.

I have used the Hydrogen Peroxide treatment on my planted tanks and it works well. I have wondered if it was reef safe. I have always followed with a water change instead of fresh carbon. http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/showthread.php?t=203684 This is the method that I have used in the planted tanks, I know that they are freshwater, but it might give you an idea for dosing amounts. Hope it helps.

I like to do a dip 32 oz of peroxide per 1 gal of tank water and dip for 3-4 min sps do not like though and Hondap0w3r shared this with me :) zoas are good lps don't like it much but do bounce back but sps not so much , if soas I would make sure they are closed first or they may melt also the industrial coral rx works well and doesn't irritate the corals nearly as much but the other coral rx are diluted to much to be affective for dipping purposes

if you give me a couple of days I can test it for you and give you the feed back what ration / concentration would you like to see? 32 oz per 1 gal of salt water ( as a dip recipe) or another dilution rate

Peroxide will work for bubble algae, but you have to remove the rock and spray it with peroxide. Let it site for a few minutes and wash off with salt water. Make sure you do all your rock work that has bubble algae on it, or it will come back. Do not get it on any sps it will kill them so I would remove them from the rock work. also I would scrap the rock first with dental picks to remove as much as possible.
