So, long story short, I bought something I thought was a duncan. It was seriously withdrawn in the pic I was sent, and it might have been grouped with some duncans. But anyway, I got it home and into the acclimation bucket and started to realize it in fact was not a duncan. Most of you will look at this picture and know immediately what it is, just keep in mind I still have trouble identifying most things -.-

So I poke at it a bit with my finger, start thinking it might sting me and get some long planting tweezers instead. I start to get the sinking feeling that this might be that difficult coral I've read about, an elegance. Oh crap. I ran upstairs to look up pictures of an elegance. Why yes, it most certainly is. Good job stupid.
I started handling it more carefully, (not prodding it with the tweezers) so as not to tear it or puncture it. Got it acclimated and in the tank and went to bed as it was 3 a.m.

This morning I went down to check on it before lights on. It was a bit bigger, nothing terribly dramatic. When the lights came on however...

It's roughly the size of two softballs when fully expanded! It's quite pretty (to me at least) and I couldn't get it's true colors in the pictures, but I took a lot to give it my best shot.

Those are the best ones. My problem is, do I try to keep it or trade it off? I'm scared of it. I read about them kickin the bucket after just a few months, and with my limited experience I'm more than a little nervous about it's chances.

I tried to put it in moderate flow and moderate lighting as I found those recommendations on the net, and it seems happy, but I have no idea really.

Input needed!

Also, what is this thing? It was brought to me along with the elegance. It turned white around the base during the trip home. Will it die?

never heard it called horn coral before... that's a hydnophora... an LPS... and also, it's very aggressive... don't let it get close to other corals... i think it's also high flow/light... but not sure...

elegance will be a hit or miss...

Ya google returned precious few hits on 'green horn coral' but I did find hydnophora on one of them. It's white half way up it's base now, so it might be a loss anyway.

While I think the elegance is pretty, it definately wasn't something I planned on, so if someone is interested and has some things to trade...

I wouldn't guarantee it, but if the elegance opened up like that in your tank, it is very happy. if you don't have fish that will pick on it, think about keeping it. stings nearby corals

It's very nice looking Molli. I have no experience with them But i have seen them get huge. Depending on what you are planning on keeping you might trade it. but if you like it try and keep it Sure looks pretty in your tank

First is an elegance and the second is a hydronopora. Hudronopora are super easy and grow good in a reef tank while elegance are a bit harder but both are very nice coral and will do great in an established tang with good flow and light

Don't trade it...just keep it. How will you ever get experience if you sell or trade the hard corals. I honestly think no coral besides SPS are hard to keep. As long as you have decent lights, and stay up on ur water changes you should be fine!!

plus, if you have it for a longer period of time healthy and stuff... it will be worth more... i wouldn't want a freshly trans' shipped piece... but if it was in someone's tank for a couple of months... i would want that one...
