I have had this tang for about a month now and just in the last 3 days he has been getting these white spots. He doesn't look like he is scratching and he is very active. I have in quarantine for 3 weeks and he was looking healthy. No spots and had same color as when I got him from the store. Could this be Ich or the start of Ich? I am going to put him back in quarantine just to be safe.

I have other fish in the tank as well. Should I be putting all of them in quarantine? Or just the tangs? Thank you..

It would be a great idea to get them all. Just be careful with copper dosing. Depending on your livestock some may be sensitive to copper treatment

Thank you everyone for the advice. The only thing that sucks is that I work 10hr days so I'm have to really on my 10yr old son to keep me updated and to do anything that needs to be done now in these first couple days while the fishes are under stress from all the rushing to get the QT up and running for them. Stressful I tell you.

Maybe not cause my stress him out more. If the other fishes have no spots leave them alone
I agree, sometimes just isolating the magnet is best. If the other fish are eating and show no signs, while the parasite still lives in the water, you can likely get the affected fish’s resistance built up in qt while the others can tough it out. To do an absolute qt of all the fish to completely eliminate ich, I believe you have to qt for 72 days to outlast the parasite’s reproductive cycle and effectively kill it off. I know for me, it would stress my fish out too much to move them all into a 10gal designated qt for 72 days. That doc aquatic’s link is a great resource for qt if you do go that route.

If your not gonna QT all your fish I would leave him in and feed heavy.

I will be QT'ing all of them just to be safe. Also since all fish are out of the DT this will give me the opportunity to deep clean and redo my aquascape.

Ich is a pain in the ass - good luck with it. to effectively remove ich from your system, you will HAVE to leave the tank fallow for at least 3 months to be on the safe side. I've dealt with ich too many times in the past and the only way it was ever gone is the fallow method i mentioned. Hopefully your fish make it... unfortunate for me all my fish died and I had to get new fish when i restarted. It helped with my fallow period since I didn't have to care for any fish or worry about re/introducing it into the tank after they came out of QT...

That's also a problem while they're in QT... you might think it's gone, and after you have gone fallow in your DT, you can just re/introduce it and you're back to square one. Yea... Ich sucks :(

Anyone try using Poly Lab reef safe medic?

Yes. However I can’t really confirm it’s efficacy at killing ich off because I tried it sorta pre-emptively on a fish I thought may have ich. I know it’s meant to operate in the free floating tormont phase of ich. Doesn’t necessarily kill off the ones super affected. That said. The fish I suspected of ich is doing well and I lost no fish. Likewise I lost no corals/suffered no receding. I spent hours researching reviews and YouTube videos before deciding to buy it. LFS told me it was essentially snake oil but then I told him the active ingredient was peroxyde salt (a derivative or form of hydrogen peroxide) and he seemed to change his tune.

TLDR; tried it, not sure if it worked. Fish lived, corals lived.

Forgot to mention I also run a UV light. I reduced the flow to about 400 gph and followed medic’s instructions about shutting it off after dosing for an hour every time I did it. Possibly the UV in conjunction with Medic is a good bet?

Mrmr thank you for the fast response. I'm at the LFS and guess here swore by it. Reviews online look promising. Gonna use it for my DT and still set up my QT for the fish.

Best of luck! Feeding is key like someone already mentioned. Eating is the best sign.
