Thanks Cody. I might try and set up a 10g for my clowns and see how that goes. I gave up on QT treatment on new fish after killing 4 in a row, so I'm hesitant to sentence them to death.

I'm gonna search the forums for the go to copper, but if anyone would like to share their experience with different brands I'd appreciate it.
I like copper power. I find it does the job and is not as hard on the fish as other copper treatments.

Matt I have a qt setup you can borrow. I've used it plenty of times. It's a 10gal I think. And I have some cupramine.

I have 2 10g tanks sitting around. Do you do daily waterchanges with cupramine? Do you usually deworm at the same time?

This is what I used the first time I had velvet. Saved my fire fish but lost everything else. I don't think it was the CP, most likely ammonia spike or temp problems combined with it being velvet and fast acting

It's what I've always used. I like and trust it. Stability is the toughest on qt tanks i think, that's why personally even before I started selling fish I ran a permanent qt tank, sump wet dry skimmer etc. Just makes things easier on you and your fish.

I kept it cycled using a bio wheel. In a pinch you can do water changes on an uncycled tank. I use cupramine and keep it at 0.5 ppm or ppb, can't remember using a lamotte low range Cooper test kit.

So you can still have some form of filtration while running copper?

I was thinking of just using a extra 30g brute I got laying around, but it looks like petcos $1 a gallon sale is still going on. I'll probably just pick up a 30-40G

Gotcha. I'll pick up a biowheel and toss it in my sump. What's it take, a few days to seed? I plan on doing and water change and using my old tank water for the 10g for now since its low nutrients anyway.

I have 70 pounds of live rock, 70 pounds of sand, wet dry and skimmer running in my qt/ot. What you don't want to have on there is a uv light or carbon. Uv light is over kill as you are already killing parasites in the water with copper and carbon will slowly remove your copper.

Running cooper with sand and rock is not a good idea, it can work but it also absorbs some of the copper over time. Makes it a little harder to control the copper levels down the road. I run a 40 gallon breeder, bare bottom, pvc pipes, with a seeded sponge in a hob filter.

So I've read, but has worked for me for some time now and yet another reason why I like copper power as it's not as harsh to the fish. I did have one recent incident where I dosed my usual amount of copper for the water volume and ended up losing some fish I normally wouldn't have. But it's always a learning experience. I just find it much easier and better for the fish to maintain their water quality this way.

mmarro22 I wish I could say I know all of this based on experience.... But I dont, I just did a lot of research and have read many instances of people running copper with sand and rock with success until the rock and sand absorbed as much copper as it could and then it leaches back in the system causing unstable levels. I know you know your stuff more than I do but we both know this hobby is always a learning experience.

Yes it is! I just hope my stubborn a$$ isn't posting a thread one day that I had a terrible case of copper leaching back with a vengeance causing a qt crash or something and warning ppl not to do it lol. The threads I've read with those warnings though are pretty old and we've come a long way so I don't know. We'll see I guess.
