IMO it's better use some RO, Ro/DI or even tap water + water conditioner and then put alquarium salt in it will disolve with in 2 day with a powerhead. Other people water might have something you don't want to have in your tank.
Just my 2 cents. :D

Isn't tap water really bad for your tank? Last i read using rodi mix with salt is best for reef keeping. That's just what i read. Correct me if i'm wrong but tap water with conditioner is a no no to my book. Unless you want to fight green hair algae for the next couple of months.

If you have liverock, which I highly recommend fresh water will destroy it, now that I do auto water change in my large system I do not have much water coming out all at once. I could go large on my small system and donate 30 gallons if that would help. There is not much bacteria in the water column so fresh made up salt will work similar to recycled tank water. I am 8n 90630 and am doing a water change on my smaller system later today.

Sorry for the confusions. Yeah not much beneficial bacteria in the water. I was trying to say to get this whole cycle thing started. I have some live rock that I will put in the sump to jump start the cycle.

Thanks. How long did it take for the 190 to complete the cycle?
surprising 2 weeks with live rock from my friend, but I did garden hose spray them to remove a lot of detrius from the rock.
put them into spare tank and had powerhead and strong skimmer skim wet for 2 days. and put few rock from my existent tank to it.
Put Bacter 7 and volka for 12 days. Level was all good.

I did the Bacter 7 on my 50 when I swapped to it but I think I got a bad batch or something. Ammonia was off the chart the morning after... I did like 3 50% water changes and a bottle of DR Tim a couple week later. I probably will do Dr Tim again. I dont think I should get the volka.. It most likely will be gone before the tank can use it :)

No, it was all new rock and new sand. I wanted to make sure the 50 is all ready before I transfer the 30 over. I checked it the morning after and the ammonia was so high. I diluted it with 1/2 water from the old tank which had 0 ammonia and still read at 4+. I have read somewhere that at 4+ the cycle will stall.

wow. that is little caution I should look at my Bacter 7 too. I dosed couple drop a day along with Volka. I thought bacter 7 is only bacteria in there.
Just curious, did you cycle the new rock because I think the ammonia is from the uncycle live rock as well? what kind of sand you use (live or dried)?

Nope all dried sand (BNIB) and dried rock from BRS that I bleached for a week and dried in the sun for a week or so. It was probably a bottle that has been on the shelve for too long.

The new 150 is the same. All new sand (BNIB) from Vu and new dried rock that I soaked in acid and sundried.
