Well, let me begin by saying generally I am not one for negativity or penny-pinching. But alas, I must voice my opinion. I just got home from Fish Collection(few miles east of the 57 on Yorba Linda) and once again I got the same less than stellar experience. It goes a little something like this...

First, I call the store and ask if they have any 3/4 tubing. They say yes and it is $1/foot. So I drive down there and ask for the tubing. He tries to convince me I need less than 15 feet, but I say thanks I'll just take 15 feet. Then I look around a little at fish and corals then go to the register where another person is there. She asks him how much for the tubing he says "$1/foot 18 feet". I wait to look at the register in case I misheard what he said. "That'll be $19.40." she says. I look at the register and say "No it was 15 feet." She doesn't bat an eye and quickly replies with "No, 18". I just laugh to myself and pay it and walk out.

Now it's not the 3 dollars that has me writing this. It's the fact that this has happened more than once. He raised the price at the register with maroon clowns before and I won't go into other things, but suffices to say, it was the same story. I have come across this behavior in other stores as well, but not as pronounced as this one.

I would like to get some opinions and/or experiences from all of you out there.

yep, been there...same story "how much for this fish?" he replies "$16" I said to myself "good deal"....get to the register and now it's $20, he is telling me that that particular fish comes from a different island...Did he not know that when he quoted me $16? Is it the $4? No. It just ruins the experience...this is a hobby, something I am trying to enjoy. It is that type of business that keeps me from being a returning customer, needless to say, I have never been back. I guess some people would rather try to jack you for a couple dollars than keep you as a returning customer...enjoy the $4...

I'm sorry but if you pay for some thing you didn't want (18 feet) thats your fault...
And last time i checked $18 + 7.75% sales tax equals $19.40
Not to be rude but maybe you should stand up for yourself.... If you don't stop people from walking on you, you will always have this problem....
Take control Bro...

^^ lol im sure he paid to avoid confrontation + he needed the tubing.

last time i checked $15+7.7.5% does NOT equal $19.40

i totally agree with bruce. this is a hobby i am trying to enjoy and people like them really ruins everything. and this is an expensive hobby at that

EDIT: pick the right fights, $3 is not worth fighting over. his walking away and never coming back and posting this thread sends out more than whatever he could have done in this store.

VVV haha you know i meant bruce wayne

I didn't even have to POST and people are agreeing with me!

On to the New World Order!

I'm pretty strong on principle, myself. From what I hear in this thread, I'd avoid them like a cat avoids a bath...

Pity.

I will say that stores like this seem to be pretty few and far between, however.

i dont have a problem "standing up for myself". Its more like I am disappointed in people when they nickel and dime me left and right. I just didn't want to get into it with him for 3 dollars. Its always something with him though. I could have made a scene(although I hardly ever do), but at that point I just wanted my tubing so I could get back home.

The way I fight back is not to go back to that place. I understand people have to make a living, but don't be dishonest about it. I would have paid $1.20/foot if that's he quoted me, but he didn't. He waited until I was at the register with my wallet out THEN he changed the price. That to me, is dishonest.

WOW... I thought I was the only punk that almost got punked :)
When I first got into LPS I had stoped at Fish Collection and was interested in some Frog spawn (sp?) I asked the guy at the register and he came over and said $16 per head and the one you are pointing at has 2 heads. I was so hyped that i went and got the one with 2 heads. I went to the register and he then charged me $80-something and some change. I was was in shock and and sked why so much. He said that its $16 per head and the one I got has to large heads and he could see 3 more that are about to grow out?!?!?!?!?!? Thats when I put the bag down and walked away... cant believe he is still open. Who new that $16 per head was a lot :) But those are the good times... :)

exactly, everyone can relate to overpaying...sometimes, there are no alternatives, you gotta do it...but quoting you something, then seeing a different price on the register is BS, esp if the guy is repeatedly doing this...let's say I say NO! I am sticking up for myself! well, I would still need the tubing...then what? take more time to drive somewhere else to save how much $ after gas? that makes no sense to me.

he requested 15 ft not 18 ft. so he got OVERCHARGED because of the extra 3ft and $3. you might want to check your logic and comprehension at the door. :aetsch::aetsch:

What the heck are you guys ranting about? If you wanted 15 feet then ask for 15 feet, don't accept 18 feet and pay for that. The register girl is Jimmy daughter and last I checked she's only 12 lol. Jimmy is a cool guy, this all sounds like a miscommunication. Think about it, do you really think someone is going to screw you over for 3 dollars?????? WOw you went out of your way to create a rant because someone charged you 3 extra dollars for 3 extra feet. lmao

You got punked because you assumed the price. If you were to have asked him the price straight out then he would have told you its 80. Jimmy is also the only fish store that I know of that is good with his prices. All the prices for fish and corals are clearly written on the glass. In the back he has corals sectioned off by price category and in the front he has all prices written down infront of the coral on the glass.

That takes me back to my point.. Grow a pair. If you ask for 15 then tell them to cut off the extra 3 feet.
Or be a little Biacth and let people walk over you because your a punk....:top:

...Well first of all, I did not get punked. I said that I ALMOST got punked. I did not buy anything nor will I ever support this store.

-and what pissed me off about this guy is that he was going to charge me for some "heads" that were potentially going to grow????? I only saw (2) heads and he was claiming that he could see that 3 more heads were about to grow...? Why would you do such thing.... thats just my experience in which I will never go back to that store. I am not saying his corals are not quality pieces, I am just saying that thats not the way to make a buck.

Good thing Tom, Rohn, and other quality people have great stores and service. :) Just my 2 cents....

so, I got punked because I bought a fish for $20 when I got quoted for $16? right...I should have left spent time and money finding another place...that would have been the smart thing to do :hmmmm:...and asia102485 said that he was told frogspawn is $16/head and the one he was looking at has 2 heads...then we he goes to pay it is $80+. We are addressing the fact that he will quote you a price, and from the time you are quoted to the time you are rang up at the register, the price goes up. Who doesn't understand that? :dontknow:

1. I DID say "No it's 15 feet" when I was at the register and then the woman(not his daughter) looked right back at me and said "No, 18" so I did stand up for myself. If it was $30 I would not have paid for it, but it would cost me $3 in gas just to find it somewhere else so I just gave him his hard-earned $3 and said goodbye.

2. I wouldnt be on a rant if it was the first time. It has happened many times and from the feedback I got it seems like I am not the only one. The rant is not about one incident. Its about his deceitful behavior witnessed over a period of time in several instances.

3. There is a very high standard deviation for pricing in this hobby. To put it bluntly, they will charge you as much as they think you are willing to pay. If you are new to the hobby, they will charge you top dollar and sell you as much as they can. If you know what you're doing and are aware of prices, you will get lower prices because they know you aren't willing to pay the high end retail prices. And yes of course you could say that for any hobby, but there are WILD swings in prices in this hobby. I would say without question the variations in prices are higher in this hobby than most.

spank you very much
