I just got a 180g with a 72" power compact light which needs all 4 ballasts replacing (I thought the bulbs had gone). I have been told to ditch the PC and go T5 my problem is I am on a small budget after buying the tank.

How do you light your tank? I don't want to go with Halides.

Halides......

What do you intend to keep in there...I am assuming you will have corals....The PC's are the same as T5s you just have alot better bulb options with T5's...If you are on a small budget you might want to try and fix the fixture...180g tanks need alot of light...you would be looking at 10-12 36" T5s or 6-8 60" or 72" T5s

Probably no corals the tank for now but I dont know if I will in the future the tank has only been up a week and has a 48" light on it now (the Tek light I have for sale), the fixture I have has 4x96w PC bulbs in it and I was told by the previous owner they has corals in the tank but they didn't say which ones.

Fixing the fixture seems like the best option but people on a different forums have told me not to waist the money as PC bulbs have to be replaced every 8 months but retrofitting any other type of light is going to cost at least $200 for very little light.

Also the ballasts in the light say 55w on them but the bulbs are 96w and they dont look like they have been changed before.

Just grab a used 72 inch 8 lamp and be done with it. I think coral gazers has some used ones under $200.

If it's fish only....or light corals..You can try and fix the fixture, It will do the job but you are probably better grabbing a chinese T-5 fixture or get a decent used one...It's probably going to cost you the same...

I just took a look at my 48" Tek light I was selling to find out why the 2 outside bulbs were not working. Someone had miss wired the ballast and put the matching colors backwards, so now all 6 bulbs work. I am going to retrofit this light into my canopy, I know its 2ft short but I have tried it and it looks ok and there is only a small shadow on 6" at each end of the tank.

You wont be happy with it...I tried on my 180g with a tek 8...but you can pull them out and cut it up...stagger the bulbs and you are golden

The light will do for now, like you say I can always stagger them in the future. I don't have the money for 80w Tek fixture.

I will post a picture later.

A couple of pictures, it actually looks brighter in person. I need to pickup some different bulbs, I have 2 daylight, 1 blue, 1 purple and 2 old yellow bulbs that I put in just fill the extra 2 slots.

lol, I had seen the listing but no pictures, I called and asked for them and he updated the add. Two minutes later I was in the car lol. Not a bad deal needed a new skimmer pump, heaters and light. It came with a chiller which they said doesn't work but the front panel lights up so that is next on my list to look at.

Cool deal....Its a nice looking set-up...The white is different...I like it and then I dont..I like the way it looks but it draws attention away from the tank..so I have always been beside myself with it....maybe one day I'll do a white set-up just to try it out
