We picked up a group of baby chickens last night and my temp makeshift brooder isn't gonna cut it for long. Looking for a large rubbermaid or plastic tomato bin near Garden Grove.

Thanks,

Matt

Are those baby chicks to feed your reptile in the garage ?
Ha! No, but we did lose a little chick the first night, unfortunately. My wife was torn as to what to do with the little thing. I just slowly turned my gaze to the boa rack with a . Why let it go to waste, right?

I get to build a coop and run, she get's her chickens, eggs and free fertilizer for the garden. It's a win/win.

What breed do you have? We started with 3 different breeds, but we're down to just one now. I really liked the blue Andalusians, nice eggs and they were super friendly. Now I just have one Sussex left. We raised them from 2 day old chicks, which my son really enjoyed taking care of them. The Andalusian we lost hit us pretty hard, because that bird was like a dog, as soon as you entered the coup, she came over and jump on you and wanted to be around you. The Marans we gave to our neighbor, as they were bullies.

We got a few different breeds. Probably made a mistake not going through something like Hilltop ect. I'm expecting to end up with some roos to re home so I bought extra. We want about 5 or 6 hens so I bought 10.
2 barred rocks
2 rhode island reds (down to 1)
lavendar orpington
buff orpington
french black/copper maran
olive egger
speckled sussex
americauna

Hopefully the odd gods are in our favor and we get at least 1/2 pullets.

Hopefully they all play nice. I was thinking we'd do a couple of each, maybe 2 or 3 types. My wife want's to be able to tell who's who and have multiple colored eggs so we will see how it goes. Hopefully it works out, they should all be around the same size. Although, the lavendar and sussex are 2 weeks older than the rest. So far playing nice but I do wonder if the 1 loss was due to being smushed in the sleeping group.

Cool, that's a good mix. It really comes down to space and how much room they'll have to roam around, some don't mind, but others get a little testy in small places. We initially bought 6 and ended up with one Andalusian rooster, which we re-homed to a nice farm. I want to pick up a couple Sussex and maybe a few Andalusians this year, but I don't want chicks, so it might be a little hard to find yearlings?

With enough hunting I'm sure you could find them but the prices are pretty crazy right now.

I'm hoping to build them a decent run attach to the coop so hopefully it works out. Maybe 4x18' or so. I'm sure there is gonna be a learning curve to it. Hopefully not too rough of one
