So I need your collective opinions- My tunze broke, I need to send it in for repair. It will probably cost as much to repair as buying a new maxspect gyre 150 or I can put in a little more cash and get another MP40QD. What would you guys do? Your suggestions, reasoning, and opinions are appreciated!

I personally like the gyre/mp40 combo. That's what I'm using now. The gyre to eliminate dead spots and the mp40 for random flows

I'd go MP40. I know a lot of people like the Gyre, but almost everyone I have talked to had to mod, or upgrade the mount to make it be as cool as it could be. I like the programmability of the MP's. Plus, they talk to each other. Heard that there is an additional wireless add-on coming for the Gyre, but that's probably put the $ outlay past the MP's...

I should also preface that I have 2 MP40QD's already in the tank, I had 2x tunzes alternating and 2x MP40qd's on reef crest. one of the Tunzes broke, the other keeps getting clogged/jammed and wont restart after feed modes (usually about 1x every month or two) so I agree the MP40's reliability and maintenance requirements are definitely in line with my needs.

I have MP10's on my little tank. Getting ready to pull the trigger on 2 MP60's for the 240 to replace the 4 Jaebo's. I looked at all of the available powerheads out there, including the Gyre. Although more $$$, I agree with you that the reliability of Ecotech products far surpasses many others. Makes the cash outlay worth it. Don't want to have to upgrade again...

Until I get the new BIG tank..... But the MP60's will work just fine in there too....

I tried a Gyre Xf130 for a bit and then swapped it out for another mp10qwd on my tank. Everything about the Vortech Pump is just more heavy duty. The xf130 was also much louder in my experience than the new qwd pumps from ecotech marine.

I think you should get a gyre. 150's are really powerful and given you have other pumps that should be all you need. It really does provide a flow pattern un matched by other pumps. I have both an MP40 and Gyre and I'm happy with both. I have the 130 and I can't hear it at all, although its not turned up all the way.

I wouldn't assume the cost of the repair will be that high. I have sent pumps to Tunze that were out of warranty and Roger fixed them for free. I always recommend that people don't self diagnose Tunze pumps rather send them in to Roger.

I sent my tunze in. Roger has fixed several of mine in the past. I'd like to try the gyre. I read the maintenance on them is a real Pain though.
