Hello all,
I'm President of the Friends of Monterey Academy of Oceanographic Science, an academic program focusing on math, science and marine biology at Monterey High School. We were founded in 1994 by Steve Webster and Chuck Baxter of the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Hopkins Marine Research Institute. Many of our board members and advisors work at the Aquarium, NOAA, MBARI, Hopkins, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, CSUMB, MPC and other research facilities in the Monterey Bay. We are developing a marine biology laboratory and have had generous support from a number of individuals and groups. I joined this community in an effort to gain information and get guidance from the many experienced reef keeping enthusiasts and marine experts that post here. We are in the process of creating a reef tank and a cold saltwater aquarium for in the classroom. We currently have a donated 40 gallon reef tank infested with aiptasia and multiple forms of algae that I am trying to rehabilitate and we have two 100-gallon tanks that will be developed into the reef and cold water tanks along with 100 pounds of live Fiji rock. My experience is primarily in freshwater tanks, so I'm hoping to get lots of guidance on helping the program create a nice reef tank along with research ideas for the students. Tips on acquiring or creating diy projects (skimmers, lighting, filtration, calcium, etc) would be greatly appreciated as we are limited budget wise but blessed with highly intelligent and motivated students. Our ROV team won the Monterey Bay Regional ROV championships this year and competed at the International Championships taking third against top collegiate programs from throughout the world - they have great mechanical aptitude. I'll be visiting lots, learning what I can and appreciate your thoughtful ideas and suggestions as our program embarks on this exciting new project.
Thanks! :hello:
