Let me know what you think? The small square piece is probably 25cents VS $6

Not sure what are the disadvantages are on this setup vs a filter sock.

I have my new Rowaphos output on the pad thats why it is a little dirty.

I use the same method. Just get a mesh filter sock instead of felt and put the filter floss in there. It works great and no socks to wash

I have a sock holder on the way and no tank set up to test with, but I was thinking you could probably fit a 4" pond basket in a 4" sock holder and line it with filter floss or poly or whatever. Easy to change out too! Anyone tried that yet? I have a ton of the pond baskets from another project so when the sock holder gets here I'll see if they fit.

That's how I do it. No sock so it does not marinate in there It stays out of the water. The junk gets pushed out to the side. That is how my new sump will be built to. So easy to replace then throw away.

Only issue is the gnarly salt creep. Zero salt creep in my sump.
Yup. That's the downside... That's why I extended the height at the corner of my sump by siliconing plexi glass...

The good side I see is that it is cost effective, easy to replace (tight spaces & no need to turn off pump) and avoids sitting crap submerged in the water column..
