Hey Everyone,
I said I would post about this as it develops so here goes. After reading Doni of donisreef.com thread on clownfish breeding I was interested in getting my own little breeding operation going.
I recently purchased 2 juvenile black ice clowns that I want to breed eventually, and set them up in their own 30G tank with sand and LR. After seeing a post by TropicalAddiction I decided that if I was going to do this (and not lose steam waiting on the young fish to pair up and breed), I would purchase a mated pair from him to get my broodstock started.
I drove out to Joey's house, he was selling 2 pairs of maroon clowns and a pair of true percula clowns. I decided to go with the percs as this might help me realize my ultimate goal of breeding some designer clowns of my own (that and they are far less aggressive which potentially means less headaches with pairing, etc down the road)
When I got out there, Joey told me that she was probably going to lay eggs that day. So after picking his brain for a little while (really nice guy with an awesome setup), I took my new fish and headed home. I had decided that I need to drill my 30G acrylic and plumb it for a sump, plus build some type of divider to seperate them from my 2 black ice juveniles that were living in there currently.
Although it wasn't my first time drilling and plumbing a tank (I did my 100G about 8 months ago), this was rather ambitious to finish in an afternoon! She ended up laying eggs in the 20G glass tank I had but by the following morning they had eaten them. This was to be expected after the move they just went through.
I finished up plumbing the tank and setting up the divider on Monday and moved the percs into their new home. Joey had told me that once I gave the pair a flower pot to live in they would never leave it, he was right
From what I have read, the pair may take a few weeks to a couple of months to start spawning again so I wanted to get them comfortable in their new home ASAP.
I am currently keeping the tank parameters as follows:
Salinity: 1.023
NO3: <20 PPM (I am thinking of purchasing another biopellet reactor like I have on my 100G reef tank, but need to get a decent skimmer first)
Temp: 83-84 degrees
pH: 8.0
I am feeding 4-5 times per day a variety of New Life Spectrum pellets and Cyclop-Eeeze, and every once in a while throwing a block of mysis in there as a treat. My plan is to broaden this a little more once I have the reactor in place to help control NO3 and PO4.
I will post more as this develops, right now I am patiently waiting for them to spawn again
