Hey Everyone,

I said I would post about this as it develops so here goes. After reading Doni of donisreef.com thread on clownfish breeding I was interested in getting my own little breeding operation going.

I recently purchased 2 juvenile black ice clowns that I want to breed eventually, and set them up in their own 30G tank with sand and LR. After seeing a post by TropicalAddiction I decided that if I was going to do this (and not lose steam waiting on the young fish to pair up and breed), I would purchase a mated pair from him to get my broodstock started.

I drove out to Joey's house, he was selling 2 pairs of maroon clowns and a pair of true percula clowns. I decided to go with the percs as this might help me realize my ultimate goal of breeding some designer clowns of my own (that and they are far less aggressive which potentially means less headaches with pairing, etc down the road)

When I got out there, Joey told me that she was probably going to lay eggs that day. So after picking his brain for a little while (really nice guy with an awesome setup), I took my new fish and headed home. I had decided that I need to drill my 30G acrylic and plumb it for a sump, plus build some type of divider to seperate them from my 2 black ice juveniles that were living in there currently.

Although it wasn't my first time drilling and plumbing a tank (I did my 100G about 8 months ago), this was rather ambitious to finish in an afternoon! She ended up laying eggs in the 20G glass tank I had but by the following morning they had eaten them. This was to be expected after the move they just went through.

I finished up plumbing the tank and setting up the divider on Monday and moved the percs into their new home. Joey had told me that once I gave the pair a flower pot to live in they would never leave it, he was right :)

From what I have read, the pair may take a few weeks to a couple of months to start spawning again so I wanted to get them comfortable in their new home ASAP.

I am currently keeping the tank parameters as follows:

Salinity: 1.023
NO3: <20 PPM (I am thinking of purchasing another biopellet reactor like I have on my 100G reef tank, but need to get a decent skimmer first)
Temp: 83-84 degrees
pH: 8.0

I am feeding 4-5 times per day a variety of New Life Spectrum pellets and Cyclop-Eeeze, and every once in a while throwing a block of mysis in there as a treat. My plan is to broaden this a little more once I have the reactor in place to help control NO3 and PO4.

I will post more as this develops, right now I am patiently waiting for them to spawn again :)

Been a while since I posted on this and I have been busy scaling up a little so I thought I'd post some more.

I have acquired 3 more pairs of clowns, 2 proven maroon pairs and a established pair of black photon clowns, so I started building something a little bigger that could house them all

I got a 65 gallon sump off craigslist for $150 which I thought was a good deal, nice sump with built in fuge which I will use as additional space for brood stock.

My plan is to have 2 29 gallon tanks on top plus a couple of 10 gallons in the back for larvae.

Here is a pic of the stand I built (needs trim but frame is there)

Here is a shot of the sump and plumbing so far. Plumbed the fuge by teeing off the return, which I think should work.

Also picked up a G2 skimmer recently which should help with the large amount of food I am feeding these guys! IMAG0217.jpg

The first pair I got (true percs) are ready to lay eggs again any day now, she is looking chubby and the male is cleaning the pot non stop.

I am ready this time and have a healthy rotifer culture going :)

Really simple, just two 5 gallon buckets with $8 sponge filters and a couple of air pumps. I feed them RotiGrow twice a day and harvest / change 30 - 40% of the water every morning. SG is kept at 1.014.

I also dose Amquel Plus every other day at double the recommended dosage.

Finally got the system up and running this weekend! I still have a couple of pairs to move eventually but making progress. Still need to add my painted acrylic tank dividers but waiting for them to cure.

I also picked up 2 new pairs this weekend will post more on them tomorrow.

4 pairs have but taking a break because of the move, hopefully they will be in the next month or so. Now that I can keep things a little more consistent in this set up that should help them along.

1 pair is going to lay eggs any time now but is in another tank so I'm not going to move them in for a while.

I have some younger established pairs that have yet to spawn.

For sure Jay, you are for sure one of the firsts, I owe you for the Gangsta Picasso hookup :)

I checked my params this morning:

0ppm Ammonia (or very close to zero)
0ppm Nitrite
15ppm Nitrate

Wow, almost no cycle! I have been feeding quite a bit too, a little planning goes a long way. I started with all new water, but I used 2 buckets full of fully cured LR, an old sock from my 30 gallon (that I left in there a week longer than I normally do), and a bottle of Biospira bacteria (for 75G). I have had my skimmer off since I started so that it wouldn't suck up the bacteria I added from the bottle. I will probably fire the skimmer up tonight.

How long do you think I should leave the sock in there for? It's pretty dirty and I am sure it is contributing to nitrates

Today my Onyx True Percula pair laid what looks to be my first viable clutch!

Since I last posted my new broodstock system is full. I now have 2 maroon pairs, a pair of Picasso's, a pair of Pink Skunks, Photons, True Percs and Onyx True Percs.

Here is a pic of the Onyx first clutch since I have had them, very large, 1500+ would be my guess, the female is a big girl :)
