no, it takes pictures from the side just fine, the problem is that you have to do whatever you can to try to reduce the distortion through the glass, which means basically taking a photo perfectly perpendicular to the glass.
this will limit you on what you can take photos of, but it works great if you can work within those parameters.

I was actually going to go with the 5300 but I went to best buy and the guy helping me was a film student and he owned both nikon and a canon and he said for a beginner the canons are more user friendly i asked him a bunch if question and I thought the canon was a better choice.
