Hey, I do alot of work with cannons, I love my 5d and my L glass. Now if I was in your position I would probably go with the cheaper of the 2 bodies and save the extra few hundred to invest in a really nice lens like a L 70-200 that would probably work out pretty awesome for your daughters meets. But then if you are really going to be using it alot you might want to go with the one that feels best, the 60D. Avoid the 7 they are great but if your going to spend that much money put out extra cash and get a full frame 5, and it just seems like that deal is a little sketchy... to say the least. Like others have said the 60D would be a great option in terms of FPS and the focus speed, but the rebel will probably meet all your needs.

+1 regarding getting the less expensive body and better lenses. However, higher FPS is definitely an advantage for sports photography. Keep in mind that if you're shooting sports from far away, the crop factor on an APS-C sensor (as opposed to your old film camera and 5D full-frame) will add ~1.6x mm to your lens' field of view. In other words, your 100-300mm lens will be more like 160-480mm. Good luck and have fun!

with the T3i at 3.7 fps, and the 60D at 5.3 fps, yeah its a great improvement which will come to be beneficial for your sports photography, but that would not at least in my mind justify the price jump necessary. With 3.7 you really shouldnt have a problem at all shooting just about anything, unless you start working for a sport magazine or something similar is really isnt that big of a deal.

shooting sports is so expensive, even just to be the crazy sports dad with the bulky hobby camera. To actually buy a good L zoom lens costs $2-4k, I would just pay the extra few hundreds for the 60D or 7D and buy a few less coral/fish.

^^^^ i like that idea ^^^^ a few less fish stuff, and you wouldnt have a problem getting the 60 at all

Hey and shoot with the lenses you got and your knew body, and eventually you could grab a used L lens, lf im not mistaken you can find the 70-200 f4 used for a pretty decent price right now,

As long as your shooting thats what matters!

Another thought, if you're planning on shooting within splashing range or outdoors (if it happens to rain during the swim meet), the 7D coupled with a weather-sealed L lens and lens protector would be something to consider. If I remember correctly, the 60D isn't sealed. The 7D has more metal, too (downside is it's heavier). Not trying to sell you on it, just providing info to help you decide.

Get a fatty memory car and play with it, seriously! I remember when i got mine and kept asking around questions about what is best. Eventually I figured it was best to learn the basic of the characteristics of each settings and manipulated. Snap away and get a hang of what works best for ya.

Hey, came across this: Canon store refurbs on sale. Use coupon code SLRF15 to save 15% on refurbished Canon EOS DSLR Cameras. T3i=$510, 60D=$680, 7D=$1155. I haven't seen these prices anywhere, and directly from Canon.
