Hey guys I'm quite new to the hobby and ready for the challenges ahead

I recently purchased a aqua reef 195 and it's currently cycling with salt water. I have a 4000lph power head in there, but may look at adding another as I know circulation is key in this hobby along with good water management skills.

I'm gonna ask a few questions as talking to genuine people in the hobby I feel is the best way to get knowledge. I've been reading into the hobby for the past 4 months before I took the leap as thought this would be a good idea.

I'm looking to grow corals in my tank as well I understand that softies are where I should start

Ask away. Lots of helpful reefers here. Welcome. Soft corals are definitely the place to start. Less demanding on cal alk and mag so you won't have to dose as much, and just hardier in general. Some grow faster than others so keep that in mind when making your choices.

What corals would you suggest are good to start with I've been told to avoid green star polyps unless I can isolate them as they can go wild

Would like some movement in my tank too if possible so any suggestions would be great :D

Sinularia has always been a favorite of mine. Lots of movement. You can get a really cool neon green colored one. But they come in other colors as well.

Zoanthids come in many colors. And you can get small frags and watch them grow that won't break the bank.

Leather corals are easy to keep as well. The Aussie Crown Leather is another favorite of mine.

Mushrooms are easy to keep as well. Some grow fast so be aware of that.

I would stay away from green star polyps, xenia, and anything clove polyp related. Some people like them though, but they can take over pretty fast.

Great thanks guys really appreciate all the help. Could anyone suggest a good place to get them from I've seen a few places such as carterhouse aquatics and mail order corals but I'm weary as I'm pretty new to all of this

Heard a few horror stories regarding pests and possible tank contaminants

Also could someone recommend a good reliable easy to read testing kit for my tank I have a refractometer for salinity but obviously I need to monitor a number of things I have testing strips but I find them a little difficult at times and heard they can be pretty inaccurate

Sorry for the questions :D

Ditch the test strip, very inaccurate. I use red sea and salifert for calcium and alk. Hanna for phosphate. Where you live, so someone can point you to a reliable lfs?

I know the site is called premier reef, but most if not all of us are located in California, US and wouldn't know of a fish store to refer you to. :) We were formally called Socalireefs... I know ... its confusing LOL

But stick around we definitely know our reefing, just can't help you with coral purchases.

As I'm quite new to the hobby so been looking at soft corals zoanthids shrooms, don't think I'm quite ready for the harder to keep corals yet I want ones that will thrive and are not too hard to keep

Hey guys so I I've just come across a very dark red anemone it fell out of one of my newly acquired live rocks it's small but strangely it doesn't resemble a aphasia anemone should I get rid of it ? Or just keep a eye on it ?
