I feel that the main reasons that many members prefer to lurk and not post their opinions/thoughts is that as we all know this hobby can be tough at times. Just when you think you have gained some experience and could contribute in a meaningful way your tank has a way of bitch slapping into reality. I have been keeping reef tanks for longer than most of the members on SoCali have been alive (40 years of experience) and I still struggle at it. Most recently after I purchased a large sack of a certain high grade salt produced in Turkey. After several water changes and weeks of head scratching, frustration and many lost corals I finally figured out what the problem must be and consulted with the owner of my LFS. I discovered that he was having the same issues as I was, with the same salt. I would never want to give somebody on the forum bad advice and cause them to have issues with their tank so mostly I am one of the knuckleheads who just lurks and tries to learn from the so-called experts.
Looks like there might be another grandpa on here. I think we’re the minority.

I've been a long timer lurker and just like reading through threads and getting inspiration for my tank. Since most threads here are FS threads, I don't comment on them; when a thread involves a general question, it's usually answered already as well so I don't feel a need to post. I've been meaning to start a build thread but always thought it was kinda late to start one with my tank reaching the 3 year mark soon. I have always been a bit hands off with my tank other than feeding and water changes since college and work gets in the way. I would like to be more active if I had more the time to!
That there I think is the case. No reason to say what’s been said if it’s good advice. I’m so counter to what others say and do my two cents is just that. I do what others wouldn’t or don’t do anymore.

For me, I’d like it to be lore of an interactive community and not just a Craigslist and unknowns trying to capitalize. This forum use to be crazy busy with local guys. I doubt the hobby has shrunk, so I don’t think that’s the issue.
I recently looked at threads from years ago. Names I never see anymore. Did the same search over on RC and those same screen names are gone or haven’t been active in years.
I’m guessing I’m the more active of old guys on here and assume as we age the more we/some just become more readers than active commentary. Settled in to the hobby. I just recently set up a system after seven years so more active again. Everyone runs chemically induced tanks today I have nothing to say. I buy the cheapest of the cheap and have very little running on my tank. Not that I don’t have the money but still operate as though it’s 20 years ago when I started although I’ve had access to ”saltwater” tanks as they were called long before that.

Which is a good perspective to share. Many ways to skin a cat. I am on the same boat that doesn’t buy the heavy nutrient are best

My dad actually got me into reefing when I was younger since he always had his tank running and was semi-active on socal RC. He was the guy giving away giant chunks of green sinularia long long time ago. He set up an old curved JBJ 20ish gal with clowns, a BTA, and some coral for me in middle school and I upgraded to a JBJ 45 gal in high school using my part time money. Now I just sit back, feed, and do maintience every once in a while since coral prices are always so high... at least for the ones I want lol. Can't justify it with going to college and other priorities

Maybe you’re not as old as I thought. Have kids your age and older. Yes, corals have skyrocketed while it seems equipment prices have stayed pretty relative to then. A $50 pump then is a $50 pump today just made better using DC. A $5 coral then is now a $25+ frag today even being more prevalent due to more coral keepers and selling from their own tanks. Privateers selling same size items as stores for same price It seems.

Seems like lots of ppl are signed up and semi active in relation to viewing threads. My question to those who are new (most relevantly in # of posts), why don’t you guys post? Either threads or responses to threads. It appears that many are familiar with forums (lots of for sale threads with minimal posts), but don’t seem to want to participate here.
Hey Jose. Not making excuses but the reason I don’t post often is because I try to only add helpful content, and many people beat me to the punch. Unfortunately, if I had to do an analysis of my posts here, I’m sure there would be a high volume in the Marketplace which is what I think the thread is trying to steer away from.

Also, many of my reef related conversations (equipment, best practices, vendor feedback, etc.) happens in real life with reefers I built a rapport with. I know this is extremely counterproductive to the forum, which is where I met most of these reefers along the 15 years I’ve been here.

Having met you multiple times and chatting outside of the forum, I can appreciate where you’re coming from with this thread. Even though I do browse the forum’s FS threads, there is community behind it and some people just come to exploit.

Some of the recent threads are in this topic (banning scammers) and it makes me excited to potentially see some changes. I’ve always enjoyed the DIY threads and will probably post a few of my current projects.

Totally see this. Hope with more interaction/community, it will bring sponsors, raffles, give away a, contests back.

As for myself personally, I generally lurk online. When it comes to reefing specifically, I've been in the hobby almost 2 years (6+ in freshwater) so I'm not exactly an expert ready to chime in on every thread. Especially if the topic has already been covered/answered.

I also just had a baby and am in the throws of getting my career back into action after the pandemic, and don't have time to contribute as much as I want to. I generally pop this open before bed and do some light reading, and pop in to see if there's any new cool trades or coral being offered.

That being said, it's glaringly obvious that I need to post more so I will do my best to contribute. I've already found some great members and traded coral locally, but I feel like I'm in the crosshairs as a shy new member!

Just wanted to thank you Jose for raising this issue. I think most of us here truly just want what is best for the forum and it's members. I for one have also met several great sellers through this forum and would hate to see this activity restricted because we get a few scammers on here who ruin it for everyone else.

I’m far less active this year than when I first joined. I actually log into SCR more often than R2R as I wanted to meet local reefers.

I do what I can to contribute here and only buy from legacy members or members who are contributing.

You won’t see me on the selling forum for a while as I’m working on growing out the frags I’ve obtained since starting the hobby about 2-YRS ago.

Also, I’m in sales and the aerospace/space supply chain issues are keeping me occupied. Work travel also isn’t helping atm

I know I was hesitant to start a build thread when I first started poking around SCR. Combo of feeling my tank was too new and not being able to get decent pictures of what I did have. Couple that with a lack of knowledge and feeling I couldn't help a fellow reefer with advice and I didn't post a whole lot.

That being said, I feel build threads are one of the best ways to start contributing on forums not matter experience level. Whether it be compliments or critiques you're bound to get some valuable input or at least start a discussion if you don't agree with the advice you receive.

I see what I feel like are forced threads/topics for the sake of new threads or activity on other forums. I don't think anyone wants that. What everyone here can appreciate is seeing pictures of tanks, fish and corals. Start a sps build, you're going to interact with stick heads. Into rare shrooms/zoas your build thread attracts those, ect ect.
Totally agree here. Build threads are a great way to learn and to share info, no matter what animals you're keeping. That said, I should probably start a thread here somewhere. I tend to help others and not focus on my own thread (on the other forum) which gets updated ocasionlly, that and I'm usually busy with work, so I just skim through other threads and don't post something worthy on my build thread. I probably overlooked it, but is there an introduce yourself thread here on SCR?
I have noticed a few posts here just trying to sell stuff and sneak things by, which is kinda BS. I think if you want to earn respect, then you have to do exactly that, earn it. I'll talk reefs all day long if I can, but in the meantime, I'll try to put together build thread, especially now that I have two tank (actually 3) that I'm setting up or rebooting.

That'd be awesome to see here. I follow it on R2R but with so many notifications over there I end up missing updates.

You have a great point. I’m one of the members with super minimal posts from San Diego as well as many of the reefers on here. I’ve had my account for years but never posted and honestly I’m not sure why! Stupid of me to say the least as all forums require some form of engagement of minimal attempt. So I will definitely be changing that this time around. Apologies for my post about a month back with minimal posts and engagement btw. Happy reefing y’all.

Just hit my year anniversary as a reefer and would love to meet others. Never really leave comments as I am still in the learning phase/ I look to more experienced reefers for advice and hope to meet some folks. I responded to IEMAS thread and hopes that this really gets to happen.

I’m still in the planning phase to get this thing going.
I’ll usually keep scr things updated on scr or the Facebook group.

I’ve banned of RC so I can’t update there. I guess I could do a better job on R2R.

I'm totally a lurker.

I am trying so hard not to mess things up when it comes to reefing, and I'm always embarrassed with whatever I'm screwing up on next, let alone posting about it.

I feel like the site in general can be a bit unwelcoming sometimes. I always feel bad when I post something and I don't know if I'm breaking the rules or not.

I've had a great time buying corals, meeting people, getting to know locals. I wish there was more of that.

Some times do you ever think who makes stupid rules!

Riddle me this Batman.

Why is it on the SCR Facebook page all posts need to be approved by admin but here in the forum that started before FB there no regulations or approval process

Hummmmm!!!! seams pretty asinine to me

Umm by the way don’t try to fake the funk I see the admin here and there.

BOOM that was the mic being dropped
