I'm Eric and I live in the IE (Redlands, CA).
I just set up my tank two weeks ago which is a (what I think anyway) 100 Gal corner Pentagon (51" across and 33" from front to back corner and 24" high) with built-in wet/dry filter that takes up what I think is 25 Gal of said tank.
I want to convert the filtration to a sort of a refugium.
I used to be pretty active in the hobby as a kid, up to about 8 years ago or so. Mostly with fresh but I have had fresh, brackish and saltwater tanks. From ponds to all sizes of tanks, from goldfish to discus on up to even raising octopus (as much as you could that long ago).
I've been involved in local so cal Killi clubs and Cichlid clubs but have never tackled reef tanks before.
I once had a job setting up custom furniture fish tanks in people's homes. That was probably the funniest job I ever had.
It seems a lot has changed in the time I've been away. So much to learn but thank goodness for the Internet!
I am looking for advice in proper setup and possibly some "oh don't do that's".
I'll probably lurk a lot and try to gleen info here and there. But I like to engage with people, so I hope to here.
I am hoping to have a mix of store bought, internet bought, local fish club bought and local beach captured inhabitants in my tank (and maybe expand to other tanks later.)
I want as much growth as possible in my tank, algae and coral. And I would like to have anemones and other such strangeness as possible in my tank as well. This I hope to couple with a little bit of Finding Nemo residents (for the kids).
I think I jumped the gun a little and am suffering a little NTS now but hope to recover soon.
I have some red mangroves and cheato algae and a protein skimmer on the way (Thanks Amazon Prime!) and am doing freq water changes (although not a lot of water currently) to save the couple of green chromis and the Condy anemone that seems to be hardest hit.
